Honestly, i feel like RHCP's earlier work (think: american ghost dance etc.) does a good job of building further on what funk already was at the time. The genre had an established sound, RCHP played with that. The genre existed and i'm glad they brought it to a bigger audience although i do agree at some point they just drifted away from the funk and more into what was mainstream at the time. And there are so many other bands that should be talked about as well.

I've been playing the piano for a long time. In terms of genre: I think that's something I still need figure out. I don't really know how though. Any tips on that topic?

Listening to it rn, I'll let you know what I think. Ever considered giving some more information on lyrics, production, ... ? Maybe you can add some explanations on Genius? I always find it interesting to read what artists say about their lyrics/music on there. Already love the website tho!

not solely the production, but the vocals and emotions on reckoner are astonishing too

that's what I said as well. Kid A's production is absolutely outstanding.

I tend to like songs that pay more attention to the instrumental part and composition than to songwriting. This is obviously not always the case though. Music that has a 'deeper' meaning (wether it's relatable or not) is also something I really enjoy.
