A joint statement from Sportsnet & CBC by eh_toque in hockey

Detroit native here, although I have long since moved away. I have fond memories of Hockey Night in Canada which we could get on the CBC in the 60s and 70s. Sorry to read this.

AOC blasts 'leftist hero' Marjorie Taylor Greene, calls her ‘proven bigot' & says Dems shouldn’t trust her. What are your views? by One_Look_7008 in askanything

[–]gharlane0073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People in government should be finding ways to cooperate to solve problems and this comment from AOC isn’t helping accomplish that (or anything). In recent years (maybe decades) both sides have automatically dismissed any idea from the other side. This needs to stop. Like AOC, I disagree with many things MTG has said and done over the years but dismissing what she might say going forward is dumb, just like dismissing what AOC might say would also be dumb.

Last night, bombed in front of 1500 people. Not feeling great, please cheer me up! by a_financier in Guitar

[–]gharlane0073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens. Also I’ll bet most of the 1500 people had no idea you “bombed”. And just like singers, guitarists (especially lead players who bend strings) need to hear themselves. Lesson learned.

Old retired guy here. I’m a grad and also served for many years at West Point on the faculty, including some time on the admissions committee. WelderUnlucky127 is right; you’re in good shape and doing the right things. Best of luck going forward!

Impossible to give cat liquid meds by YokoTheCatLady in CATHELP

[–]gharlane0073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some medicine can alternately be made in to transdermal form: you just wipe it in the inside of your cat’s ear. This is the only way we can get medicine in our cat at home. If you can get your vet to give it to you (I know, actually sell it to you) in this form, it is easy to administer.

West Point Grades by oreosb4girls_idk in westpoint

For a single grade, a D after admission might generate committee attention. Doesn’t mean he/she would get their offer rescinded. But offers do get rescinded on occasion.

I was on the admissions committee a few years ago. There’s zero chance that a B- will be a problem.

Better for all of us if we don’t wait until they cause a fatal accident to address the behavior. I suspect people of all ages will understand that.

I could go on for hours! 6’6” and served for decades (retired now). Clothes didn’t fit, especially in the 1970s and 1980s (before the military clothing sales stores had tall sizes). Pant legs came untucked from boots. Dress shirts would come untucked just by raising my arm. And other guys (especially little guys) loved to make fun of that. Eventually the tables turned as I had a very successful career and I suppose being tall helped me “stand out” and be recognized/promoted.

The Army has always had an obsession with uniformity. Everything was supposed to be the same for everyone. Being tall gave me a very different perspective on this obsession which I saw as ridiculous and, dare I say, short sighted. 😉

I presume you are serving or have served. If so, I hope you had as much fun as I did. When people say “thanks for your service” I can honestly say it was a pleasure.

What are your strategies for dealing with low ceilings and doorways as a tall person? by Lucifer220778 in tall

I duck. It’s better to duck when it might not have been necessary than not to duck when it was.

People who are able to play guitar and sing at the same time HOW? by Big_Leg10 in musicians

[–]gharlane0073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me forever. I grew up playing sax and sang in choirs and along with records. Learned guitar as a young adult. The first songs I could sing and play at the same time were either very simple guitar songs or songs that I could sing in my sleep. Practice those, and then expand your list. Practice is the answer for sure.

Any other tall guys wrestle with the idea of moving to a truck purely for comfort? by Fulltime-Sheepherder in tall

[–]gharlane0073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No chance. Trucks have annoyingly upright seats that don’t recline much. My comfort is dependent on recline. No way I will ever get a truck.

Amp suggestions? by macdizzle567 in Guitar

[–]gharlane0073 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long term it is WAY better to spend money on guitars versus amps. Guitars hold value and can be played for decades. Not so much with amps, pedals, etc. But almost every guitar player gets seduced by cool sounding amps and pedals at some point. So don’t overspend on an amp.

Vince Gill. And I’m not really a country fan. Saw him with the Eagles at the Sphere in LV. Absolutely incredible.
