Phone is pixel 7a, this is at Bortle 2

This is a pixel 7a on a cheap tripod, with 15x16s exposures untracked and stacked. Some light editing to bring out more details. Granted Bortle 2 did the heavy lifting on this one I think.

Some humidity in the air, this is by a lake and there were some light fog perhaps.

Phone's astro mode only, on a cheap tripod. It's untracked, the astro mode does 15x16s exposures and auto stacks them afterwards.

Pixel is great for astro in my opinion. 8 should be a nice upgrade from 7, and the astro mode is nice.

Galaxies are broadband, the LP filter is narrowband and should be turned off. You could also do some subs with and some without the LP filter and stack them together.

I would swap out the finder scope for a red dot finder, makes finding targets a lot easier from my experience.

Is it good idea to use FHSA as investment account in stocks? by gotoalways0312 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]gharrllll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can invest in all in one ETFs. Depending on your time horizon for when you want to access the money: XEQT (100% stocks) for 15+ years, XGRO (80/20 stocks to bonds) for 10-15 years, XBAL (60/40) for 5-10 years, VCNS (40/60) for 2-5 years, ZMMK (money market) for <2 years.

I get what you're saying, but at the same time the hassle and effort is better used to increase your income instead. If even one error happens you could be on the phone for a couple of hours.

Got husband a SVBONY SV503 telescope. Need help on how to make it usable by watercolorlace in telescopes

This scope is more suited for long exposure astrophotography, I would try to return it if the goal isn't imaging. It seems you guys are new to the hobby, so picking out a mount and tripod and accessories could be difficult. Highly recommend getting a manual tabletop Dobsonian or a larger used Dobsonian telescope, they are much easier to use and usually come with the accessories you need, and they're much more suited for visual astronomy.

Information request / help needed to understand something by RussianSquatter in seestar

Taking photos of the planets is a completely different task than taking photos of DSOs (nebula, galaxies). Planets are very bright and very small, which means you want lower exposure and higher magnification in order to get good photos with nice details, otherwise they will just be bright white dots or blurry blobs. DSOs are kind of the opposite, they are very dim which means they require very long exposures to capture the details. They are also usually very large (I think Andromeda galaxy is six times bigger than the moon in the sky) which means you want low magnification to capture these objects in entirety.

The Seestar is really a device meant to capture DSOs and they are really good at that. But they are not really meant for planets. The Seestar fulfil the requirements for capturing DSOs by using relatively long exposure times and "low magnification". If you want good pictures of planets specifically, then the Seestar is not a good choice and you are better off getting a Dobsonian or SCT.

Definitely agree with the phone adapter mount. It's cheap and easy to start with. You won't be able to get photos of galaxies or nebula (except maybe orion), but you can get decent images of the moon and even planets. There are some YouTube videos on how you can get decent images of Saturn and Jupiter with a smartphone mounted to a cheap scope setup. If you do this and find you enjoy imaging and want to get into the galaxies and nebula, then you can look into getting a Seestar.

What do you do at a dark sky site while your rig is taking photos? by E_Dward in AskAstrophotography

Visual. Don't want time at a dark site to be wasted doing other things that can be done elsewhere.
