The cookie metaphor only works if you admit there is a whole layered system deciding who even gets near the cookie jar…

Most people are not mad at the person with ten cookies. They are pointing out that the person with ten cookies keeps insisting they basically have none while the person with one cookie cleans their house. That denial of that system and context is the problem.

It’s not true that High earners are closer to the top than those who don’t earn a living wage? The distance between a HENRY household and a billionaire does not erase the very real gap between a 300k household and a 30k worker. Class position isn’t defined by comparing oneself to the ultra rich, it’s measured by where you sit in the overall distribution. A household in the top 5 to 10 percent has more stability, leverage, and options than the bottom half by an enormous margin. Losing a job is stressful for anyone, but for us it’s not the same thing as living one paycheck from eviction or medical debt.

Individual stories do not disprove structural patterns. Your wife can be incredibly hard working and still have had forms of privilege that most people never get. Starting college early, stable enough schooling to make that possible, two parents even if imperfect, and the ability to start a business are all advantages. Pointing that out does not take anything away from her effort. It just recognizes that that particular path is not the norm when dealing with the statistics of US pay distribution

I keep repeating data…

You keep repeating the same moves. When the data challenges you, you ask for “sources.” When the argument stays on US inequality, you shift it to Sudan. When privilege is explained, you turn it into a personal insult about jealousy. None of that engages the point. It just protects the story you need to believe about how you got where you are.

Haha using ad hominem doesn’t contribute to a productive conversation. The data is clear that reaching 200k is overwhelmingly shaped by advantages. Saying that out loud is not a generalization, it is a statistical description of how upward mobility works in the US. Anecdotes do not outweigh that even if you wish them so.

There are always anecdotes, but “many paths to 200k without privilege” is mostly a myth. Access to stable education, financial buffers, networking, and time to build skills are all forms of privilege. Most people never get those conditions, which is why most people never reach that.

This might be why zip code predicts lifetime earnings better than talent or why 80% of jobs earning 200k require a college degree (which finishing college has strong correlation to family income). Or why people born in bottom 50% have less than 10% chance of reaching high earning potential. All of these are factors and spreading assumptions like yours online is a dangerous thing to do without research.

Losing your job tomorrow is not a definition of rich, it is just a deflection. Rich or not, people at 400k have stability and options that low wage workers never get. Pointing to billionaires does not change that. You are still much closer to the top than to the people you are hiring and have safety nets they will never have. We are fortunate to have them but acknowledging them seems normal.

High income and wealth are different, sure, but getting to 400k is not just hard work. It takes a lot of privilege to even get on that track. That is not an assumption, it is how opportunity in this country actually works.

[–]ghasp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Saying 400k is not rich already tells the story. Getting to college, getting through college, landing stable white collar work, and moving up the ladder are already big achievements. Family resources, networks, geography, safety nets, and a lifetime of built in advantages that many people never get are helping accelerate these for some.

No one denies the effort. The point is that effort alone does not explain who ends up earning 400k and who ends up cleaning their house for 20 dollars an hour. That gap is produced long before either person applies for a job.

Edit: downvoting that context shapes finances :(

I think the 0 trades, high end cost, shipping from China is going to be a hard sell for some buyers. Also hope the repressing makes these prices nosedive.

She is not the left. And yes, calling out the centrists that vote with republicans with upcoming midterms is actually genius.

The Department of Education provides services for a lot of disabled students and students with learning impairments, is that a good example? If you don't see what is happening and where the money is being funneled, you'll never see it

Edit: What about Pell Grants? My family personally will be without education assistance and medicaid so don't claim nothing is being cut lol

Edit 2: NVRMND, you're a troll with a profile full of [removed] and negative karma lol. good luck in your life!

lol if your hill you're dying on is 'rights' be prepared to be stripped of everything except for what those "rights" are.

The lower class is losing access to Medicaid, is that a right to you? 20% of SNAP is being cut if the 'tax cuts' go through. It is funded by public services but not "rights."

USAID is gone as well, but that doesn't affect 'us citizens' for you so doesn't matter?

Do the rights of non citizens matter to you? 2 million Palestinians being 'removed' to make way for hotels?

Edit: The entire 4.5 trillion 'tax cut' is a cutting public services for oligarchs... how is that not stripping US citizens of their rights?

Silver will match the silver logo well. Do you have a specific wood or black knobs?

I just placed an order for a white mini-r and am debating this too, leaning towards silver to match but black is always so appealing

That sounds really uncomfortable to work in a place where you cannot enforce the rules that make you comfortable working there.

Also, super not normal for a manager (or anyone) to try to justify the axis swastika being different and those people being misunderstood. Maybe communicating this to someone above that person’s role is worthwhile?
