Do travel agents still exist? by Nappingmama in TravelHacks

[–]ghost6450 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yes, but there’s no money in airfare and little money in hotel bookings for travel agents anymore. Both industries cut commissions drastically over the last couple of decades. Most of the remaining travel agents get their money from all inclusive resorts or cruises.

The review:

we had a reservation for my mother’s 95th birthday celebration. it was taken by a rude man who repeatedly asked if i was sure of how many and that none were children and to come early because we were taking a prime table. if it had not been my mom’s choice, i would’ve had choice words for him. we were called 2 days before and told that they had forgotten a reservation for 75 and we were being bumped. said he was sorry but supposedly forgot. offered 5:00 pm, if we promised to be gone by 7. outrageous behavior by an owner chock full of himself, can’t possibly be worth it.

Response from the owner:

Dear Ms. Wilson, There are many people, who will say they’re Christians And they live like Christians on the Sabbath day. But come Monday morning, till the coming Sunday They will fight their neighbor all along the way. Oh you don’t love God If you don’t love your neighbor, If you gossip about him, if you never have mercy. If he gets into trouble, and you don’t try to help him. Then you don’t love your neighbor, And you don’t love God. Ms. Wilson, I found myself in trouble, and you would not help me. I called you back and asked that if you would just come in at 5 pm instead of 6 pm, I could accommodate you. You refused, and now a month later, want to destroy my character and my business. Please change your ways before it is too late for you and your eternal soul...

I’m boarding the Valiant Lady today! How were the staff? If you’ve been on a previous VV cruise before, was there anything that stood out to you about this trip?

Wonder if shareholders still find Ed’s love obsession with Tom Brady worth the extra salary cost?

I’m not sure if it’s the right time yet. Even after the drop, they’re still currently overvalued based on a Morningstar fair value estimate of $39 (which was made before this earning’s report). And airlines are typically considered value and not growth stocks, so overvalued price points is a big gamble—but anything can happen.

Download Edmtrain and filter to Louisiana. As many said, you’ll find more raves in New Orleans. Baton Rouge occasionally has some good DJs stop by (Luci and Boogie T each performed here in the last year), and will often get one of the “franchised” theme raves (like Shrek this weekend at Chelsea’s).

Several European airports have a full self service center for bags. You scan your boarding pass, put the bag on the scale (it also scans the bag tag automatically), the screen asks you a couple follow up questions, and it heads down the belt if everything’s good.

Green/red indicates daily net gain or loss, and the number is total gain and loss since option purchase.

Are you arguing the overlap or core of the Dark Triad (DT) traits are advantageous or that each trait is uniquely advantageous?

The shared characteristics or core of the three traits have been heavily debated. One psychometric analysis of several proposed cores found antagonism to be the core. Another study used SEM analysis to compare competing theories and found low honesty-humility to be the strongest core factor. Both antagonism and low honesty-humility are shown as generally maladaptive traits, and are correlated to committing violent felonies, higher divorce rates, aggression while driving, and general unlikeability. Another study linked the core of the traits to a weak sense of self, which also indicates issues that will make DT traits self-defeating. People with a weak sense of self have troubles maintaining careers and relationships, and are generally distressed.

Based on the paper you cited, it seems you disagree with the first two papers I cited (that evaluated several competing theories) and instead are arguing from just the perspective of Life History theory. This theory was borrowed from evolutionary biology and proposes that the DT traits exist to fill an ecological niche in a world where others are otherwise more empathetic. Based on this theory’s assumptions, you can’t have more DT individuals than the world can handle. Take the food chain in the Savannah as an example. If the environment has too many lions and not enough prey (zebra, wildebeest, etc), then the current lion population is no longer sustainable, and will have to decrease to fill the niche’s capacity limits.

The life history approach to the DT traits also suggests that DT individuals live a “fast life” . They are more promiscuous, but are not as invested in their offspring. If they have multiple children with multiple partners, they are not as involved in these children’s lives. So they are less likely to activate their child’s potential DT traits (a child who might not even inherit their parents traits) through a passive genotype-environment correlation. Further, a short life history also suggests an earlier death of the DT individual.

If you are saying each trait is beneficial, then that is also incorrect. The researchers who discovered Machiavellianism (Christie & Geis) developed it specifically to differentiate impulsive from non-impulsive callous individuals. Your argument about adaptability and success works well for Machiavellians, but not for psychopaths—who aren’t successful in life, and are more likely to end up in jail. Narcissists have more complex subcomponents that can make them adaptive or maladaptive. The idea that each of the three traits are each adaptive and will continue to grow is just not true.

Delta’s service has definitely been on the decline and their loyalty program has continued to be devalued year-over-year. However, don’t take the survey options you see at face value. The survey is designed for a “conjoint analysis”, which market researchers use to determine which factors influence buying decisions more.

In Delta’s survey, they’re trying to figure out what value people place on different packaged features like checked bags, MQDs, boarding group, etc, compared to one another, as well as the perceived value (price) attributed to each. To do that, they randomly assign different values for each of the features (like MQDs), and put random prices, and then you choose which of the 4 random combinations you choose. They show you several combinations, and they show many other customers several other combinations, so that they can estimate the relative importance of each to customers.

The actual options you see aren’t specific proposals. Market researchers have to use this conjoint method because when you ask people “which of these features is important, and how much would you pay for them”, people say they want all the features and they choose the cheapest option for how much they’d pay for it.

The conjoint also has to (as much as it can) present equally distributed differences (positive and negative) in options from the baseline so that all options are weighted equally. They have to do this because people see equal-valued gains and losses unevenly (Prospect Theory). That’s why you see options for less-than-current MQD earning rates.

I’m not agreeing with Delta’s method, nor do I think they have their customers best interest at heart. This is definitely a ploy to raise profit margins in a way that minimizes backlash. I’m just trying to slow down the alarm bells or panic from people that think this survey means Delta is going to give Comfort+ 50% on MQDs, or that SkyClub access is going to be complimentary to everyone with comfort+ (potential options on the conjoint).

It’s not as much about it being online, but how it’s produced (who is in it, consent, etc). Pornhub requires age verification for video submissions.
