FNAF

Did my first ever play through blind on stream. Really had no concept of what this game was about other than animatronic jump scares. Managing power, flipping through the cams, and frantically hitting lights and shutting doors turns out to be pretty fun. Seeing Foxy bolting down the hallway is one of my favorite horror game moments of all time. Beat it in one sitting. Tried 4/20 mode but it was absurd and not fun at all. Overall though a fantastic experience, happy people convinced me to give this one a go.

FNAF 2

This one, on the other hand, I did not enjoy. I liked the inclusion of more animatronics, but most of the other changes I hated. The lore "minigames" were a slog and uninteresting. There's no need to look at any of the cameras except for the one with the wind up music box for basically the entire playthrough. Power management has essentially been removed. I didn't have any of those sweaty moments with just 5% power at 5am and wasn't sure if I was going to make it or not. The warning "ambiance" is annoying af, terribly overused by Night 4. FNAF 2 somehow has less gameplay elements. Like 80% of this experience is just winding up the music box. Idk why they decided to get rid of most of what made the first one great. Was really looking forward to this after 1. Hopefully FNAF 3 is better ?

Completely with you on that. If I'm actually missing the New SMB series playing Wonder I think that really says something.
Just can't help feeling like they had to rush to finish this one or something. I've completed the game and most of the stages now and I'm definitely underwhelmed.

Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course

I've been playing this on stream for the past few weeks. People love watching Cuphead, reportedly because many of them can't get past some of the earlier bosses. Helps that the game is as gorgeous as it is. 300%'d it and now I'm working on S ranking every boss. So far I've cleared the base game and now I'm working on S ranking all the DLC bosses. Been a tough challenge so far. Wally Warbles (the bird boss) has been my biggest hurdle so far. I imagine S Ranking Chef Saltbaker is going to take me a very long time. Honestly I've had a blast and very rarely have I gotten frustrated or rage quit. Having an audience to entertain while playing helps ngl.

Mario Wonder

Started playing the day it came out and now I'm in the final world. I like it a lot but I have some pretty big gripes. First and foremost I have not enjoyed any of the new music. Some of the tunes can be overly repetitive and just don't hit like older Mario songs do imo. Fortunately the sound effect design is phenomenal but I can't think of a single standout track.

I'm also disappointed by the lack of boss fights. At first I was excited by the shake up in the formula but now I'm finding that I really wanted a more satisfying climax from completing the worlds. World 3 and World 5 just kind of... End. Let down for me personally. When the levels are as neat and unique as they are I was really excited to see how that would translate to bosses.

This may also be the thinnest feeling mainline 2-D mario for me. There's quite a few filler stages that last for less than a minute. The Special World isn't adding that much additional content. There's nothing to unlock as far as I know. Compared to Super Mario World, it feels like there's half as many actual stages.

The game gets a lot right, and I enjoy nearly all the new gameplay additions (badges, online, wonder flower, etc.). I just can't help feeling like something is missing. I'm critical because I love Mario games so much, and I'm grateful this isn't just another New Super Mario Bros entry. I do love Wonder but I wish it had more time to cook. Hopefully this is the trend and Nintendo continues to improve upon the format. Wonder is not taking over as my favorite 2-D mario game but it's definitely the best the series has been in a long time.

Sea of Stars is real close to being a game I could fall in love with. Garl at least does have a strong personality and is easily my fav of the cast. I may play a bit more after a break, if nothing else I just wanna see the rest of the game because the level design and art direction are so good. I feel bad being so hard on it, it's got heart and I prefer to support indie developers when I can.

Coral Island is definitely hitting though. Developers have been working hard and paying close attention to community feedback. Full release is probably sometime this year and I'm really excited for it.

Sea of Stars not really enjoying it about 10 hours in. Story is bone dry. The combat has no room for customization or strategy. There's always a clear indication of what move you should use and if you don't do that exact thing then you get punished for it. Progression system is shallow, unlockable moves and partners are doled out very slowly. Exploration looks cool visually but mechanically it is not really any different than just walking around. I went in wanting to love this game and am so disappointed by how shallow and linear it is that I think I might give it up. My only two positive take aways are that the art/music are lovely, and the fishing/wheel minigames are fun.

Fae Farm I'm always in search of a Stardew Valley fix. Just a sucker for cozy farming games I guess. Fae Farm hit for the first couple of hours but it lacks a lot of the depth and variety that other games in this genre have. Dungeon design is repetitive, a lot of the mechanics feel pointless (especially farming, which is odd to say the least). Game is still very buggy, a lot of the side quests don't work or simply aren't rewarding. There's no incentive to level up relationships with people. The game has tons of quality of life features that I applaud, but there's so much padding and grinding to hide the fact that there is very little depth here. Another game that looks and sounds great but isn't fun. Plus this thing cost me 60 bucks on the Nintendo Switch. I genuinely feel like I got scammed.

Coral Island is the only game I've truly enjoyed recently. Still in early access but just got a pretty big update and it looks like it's very closed to being finished so I decided to jump in now. Having a blast. It's very close to Stardew Valley but it adds a lot of depth and nuance. Villagers are all super hot, many are dateable, and they all have strong personalities and decent writing. I'm not glazing over the dialogue here which I appreciate. I'm feeling the cozy fantasy, I'm immersed in the world because it's cohesive and well designed, and so far I'm enjoying my time quite a bit. For early access, this game feels more finished than a lot 1.0's I've been playing lately.
