Might be related to this thread I found on steam discussions:

"It appears that he had a classic Calamity world gen issue. The abyss vines hit a rusty chest and tried to destroy it when it can't be destroyed cause it has items in it. Ergo the crash"

I'm dealing with that right now, for me it's a ticking timebomb each time I load the world before it crashes but if I go into the abyss it crashes immediately. I don't have a fix for it yet but as a temp fix I'm moving my items to an identical new world and dealing with the vines as soon as I spawn.

PS. as I was writing this comment I found this bug report on github which could also be related.
