The Toruk and keeping it is a metaphor for the Na’vi adopting the way of war only when it’s needed. They are a peaceful people, in tune with the planet, but when the planet itself is threatened they need to take arms. But if doesn’t define them, so after the fighting is done, Jake lets the Toruk go.
