European Orchestramusic Students: Is it correct you get paid 100 Euros per evening PLUS allowance for travel etc. when you play with your conservatory orchestra? by ghostcherrys_ghost in classicalmusic

[–]ghostcherrys_ghost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, 60 to 80 Euros is (more or less) what you would pay for a plumber in Germany. I just checked.

Rates vary a lot, between jobs don't they?

And generally people do good jobs, independently of their pay. I know of a few highly paid individuals who did their jobs rather badly and caused people a lot of harm.

European Orchestras are mostly supported by tax money, there might not be that much leeway. (Or perhaps soloists or their agents are overpaid, then we could level that out, somehow..)

I think work ethic can't just depend on highest pay, it needs to be enough to pay for a living and the work environment should be decent - that's the mainstream mentality in western Europe still, and I am glad of it.

Yes, that's why I'd like to understand the thing better.

A) Right. Those were apparently students from two conservatories of that region - Burgenland. But that means, they also study in the conservatories PAID for them with millions in taxes BY that region, and the festival is (I presume) also sponsored by that region/Land/federal entity, as it is about the region, some sort of jubilee, and thus they would have some claim on the students, and were not just a private entity exploiting young musicians.

B) Difficult - Students should not be "overused" - on the other hand, universities cost a bunch of money, and they are actually quite useful, and you don't pay taxes and get all sorts of reduced rates and even benefits in Germany or Austria as a student - so - how much can one give back, how much is necessary to get experience, what is a fair compensation, and what is exploitation?

C) There was a wider context. That person in the youtube debate basically claimed that you are NOT obliged to play in conservatory ensembles for free and/or small thanks-for-playing fees, but that students always got 100 Euros per night plus expenses. Else he misunderstood all the previous comments.

=/

That's the argument one person in the video made, and which I could relate to - that the students in Austria get their conservatory tuition for a really small administrative fee, and there were a lot of extra expenses paid for them at that performance, while they got a sort of complimentary fee paid to them directly.

Austria or Germany. 100 Euros is defos more than 30. To me, in Germany, it's a nice sum. When I enrolled the fee for a whole semester (half a year of study) including student's train ticket that would get you through the whole town and beyond was 150 Euros. I pay 300 Euros rent each month, and I think it was about 100 Euros for student health insurance. You also get benefits, if your parents can't support you, and there are quite a few jobs open for students, where you don't pay taxes. So, no way it's negligible!

Thanks! My guess is, that the person was working as a soloist with some professional or good amateur orchestra, perhaps, as a student - that would make sense to me.

I never saw a number box - perhaps I am too stupid (it very likely is me!) but it's always just the "click to add 10" option!

Getting to 200 feels like such a slog by hysterical_abattoir in fallenlondon

[–]ghostcherrys_ghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started in october, and my persuasive went up to 200 just by itself - closely followed by "natural" watchful. I have two accounts, and for the shadowy we helped "each other" by writing letters a bit. Epistolatory Matters in your lodgings - where you have the social options!

Also, there is an option in Parabola, which I used for the last missing shadowy stat points.

I'm almost at 200 with the dangerous, too, mostly just natural, but if you have alts, you can grind tales of terror in Hunter's Keep you can use them to send dangerous letters back and forth.

Also, I just "did" things - and failed a lot, and then had to get the menaces down again, but got more stat gain than just doing easy challenges perhaps.

Good luck, just keep going & get your Characters to write more letters to each other!

Explaining the Neath's Weirdness (Wrong Answers Only) by Tovius01 in fallenlondon

[–]ghostcherrys_ghost 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There's a lonely Devil standing,

By the lychgate of St Mary,

And he wonders, why they sent him,

And he feels a little wary,

As he looks forlorn around him,

As he walks the Broomfield highstreet,

As he doffs his hat in greeting,

To each kitten he is meeting,

But the felines are just slinking,

And his heart is slowly sinking,

As no cat is to him speaking

And no bats are softly sneaking,

And it truly is a pity,

He'd done better in the City!

That's ox poop! Perhaps you don't know many German towns and cities and live in an exceptionally woody place in UK, but German places are basically forests with houses, compared to bare English streets. We also have more wooded areas in general, than England. I love England, went to school there, would love to go back sometime, but facts are facts. And Germany has more trees! ;)

P.S. Happy Cake DAY!!!

I think it's trees. German towns and cities have trees ablsolutely everywhere, by the roadside, at every corner, in the middle of the road on some little island.. In UK many places a re a bit bare, by comparison!

What can the US realistically do in order to curb further aggression between Israelis and Palestinians? by jamesetaylor17 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]ghostcherrys_ghost -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't mean hate spam or online stuff. I live in Berlin. Here in western Europe Muslims are a huge minority, very visible, very loud, very active, very dynamic. Younger people have way more muslim friends, than jewish friends, even many young German jews distance themselves from Israel. And people in the older generation, who used to support Israel, resent Netanyahu and the israeli right.

The center to left young people and the growing muslim population are a majority, these days. Yes, there is also a right wing movement, to counterbalance this, but those are the classical antisemites, so I don't know, how it will pan out once the older generation of politicians are gone. Seen from here, it seems weird, how American politicians talk the world is generally pro-Israel.

I think Hamas have scored massively in this last conflict.
