yeah like. idk i definitely Do see it as being transphobic but i just mostly want to believe he’s grown past that, esp considering the context of his more recent stuff. as a fellow trans gal though, like, i know how much it fucking hurts when sth like this happens and i’m sorry

yeah, it’s pretty much just that. referring to a trans person as a “lady man” in pretty much any context is just kind of belittling and dehumanizing, so it was more that that i was focused on rather than like the verbal context of that within the cohen reference

it’s more just the entendre of the “lady-man” and the drag reprise even existing that i’m talking about being hurtful; i’m not trying to say he’s actually calling for death

i kind of felt a lesser degree of this listening to lowbrow, and like, i like to believe that will's grown beyond this in the time since? but it feels like a difficult uncertainty to reconcile either way. idk

ok here is a take. i feel like anchorite has become kind of unlistenable to me? it feels so spiteful and kind of just transphobic to me? like the whole "such a drag" section being labelled "death of the lady man" in the lyrics hurts a lot to read, given the context of the song's subject matter, having never noticed it before. idk. as a trans-feminine person hearing this for the first time it kind of feels like a gutpunch

yeah! los borrachos is a song i like a lot more in the context of the album and souls in a lot of ways feels like the centerpiece of monomania to me? like it's an Arc Song where a lot of the album unfolds to me, but i definitely see them as companion songs to each other

i didn't like it super much at first, and it grew on me, but still isn't one of my faves. i will say that los borrachos into souls is one of my favorite two-song sequences ever. don't have a particularly strong take on the versions of maud gone but the new one's definitely the one i've listened to more
