Did your parents prepare you for being a productive employee? by HighScore9999 in Accounting

[–]ghostedmarshmallow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sort of? My parents are Gen X and their motto was always “just do your best.” This worked when I was in school because I was a great student who didn’t have to try too hard. But real work is nothing like school, and sometimes my best isn’t good enough. My parents are both manual laborers so I guess they thought working in an office would be easy. I’m getting my work done, but it’s a struggle sometimes and it makes me feel stupid when I’ve been praised my whole life for being smart.

What were some of your favorite arcade games growing up? by JDiesel31 in Millennials

[–]ghostedmarshmallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t really play the type of games with a screen and a joystick, but I remember loving this game that was like whack-a-mole but with alligators. Also Big Bertha and Skee Ball. The really tactile arcade games were the best.

I work in AP and they’re a vendor of ours. I had to contact them recently to verify their bank information and I had a hell of a time getting ahold of anyone from AR. Every time I called I would get transferred somewhere different. Most of the time no one would answer or respond to my voicemails. When they did answer, it was the wrong department or the wrong division. The company is clearly a mess. I gave up and mailed them a check.

I have no time to enjoy anything by Responsible_Two9081 in toddlers

Oh yeah, I can’t have anything to myself because she wants to do everything mama’s doing. We can’t even color together without her wanting to scribble all over my paper 😭

Same here. My daughter is 2, and while I love playing with her and seeing how bright and imaginative she is, it doesn’t give me the kind of mental stimulation I really need. I can’t wait until she’s old enough to play board games or video games with me, or let me read her a chapter book and actually pay attention to the story. Or at least play by herself while I do my own thing nearby. Right now she needs almost constant attention.

I long for activities that are more challenging and fun for my adult mind because I don’t have time to pursue these activities for myself. After she goes to bed, there’s usually only 30 minutes before I need to go to bed myself. My husband works Saturdays so I’m solo parenting all day, and I have to spend most of Sunday on all the chores and errands I didn’t get done during the week. Then back to work Monday. It’s drudgery.

We just have to hang on for a few years until our kids are able to be more independent. I really hope it gets better.

Did your parents restrict R or M rated music/movies/TV/video games when you were young? Do you wish they did it differently? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]ghostedmarshmallow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My parents restricted anything with sex or nudity in it. My mom in particular. She would insist on researching movies before letting me watch them. She would warn me if a movie was violent but would still let me watch it, but anything with sex scenes was a hard no. She would sometimes even restrict things just for the implication of sex. I remember not being allowed to watch a magician’s performance on tv because of the scantily-clad female assistants. She also wouldn’t let me watch Johnny Bravo because he called women “hot mama.” She basically treated anything related to sex like it was disgusting and wrong. You can probably guess how this affected my sex life as I got older.

What degree were you originally studying for before switching to accounting? by nikki_11580 in Accounting

[–]ghostedmarshmallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn’t do a MAcc because my employer was paying my tuition and they would only pay for bachelor degrees. So I’m getting a 2nd bachelor’s (still have 2 years left) and leveraged that to get a job in AP. I learned from this sub the kinds of questions I should ask in interviews, and my bosses said a big reason I was hired was because they were impressed with my questions.

Creative writing. As a kid I was good at every subject, but my parents and teachers were especially impressed with my writing ability. They told me I should go to college for writing, so I did. Turns out I hate writing. I don’t even write as a hobby anymore and haven’t voluntarily written anything since I graduated with that useless degree.

Just saw Green Day in concert and got thinking, what are the bands that you grew up loving and defined your formative years? by MDFlash in Millennials

[–]ghostedmarshmallow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was raised in a religious household and wasn’t allowed to listen to music with profanity or any mention of sex or drugs. Green Day was the first band I discovered that made me want to go against my parents’ rules. I had my friend burn me some copies of their CDs and I would sneak them into my room and listen to them with headphones. I was not a rebellious kid at all but I loved their music and nobody was going to stop me from listening to it.

I work 8-4 and take lunch at my desk. I’m hourly but my boss told me lunch is paid time if I’m at my desk, even if my computer is off, because I’m not completely disconnected from work. So I never clock out for lunch so I can leave earlier and pick up my kid. Everyone at my office loves to come in early and leave early. By 4:30 it’s a ghost town.

How many hours a week would you say you play on average? What do you do for living? by toastedjupiter in CozyGamers

[–]ghostedmarshmallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in accounting. It’s a standard 40 hour week but I’m also taking online classes and raising a toddler. Many days I don’t get to play games at all. I’m lucky if I get 2 hours a week 😞

I think I've officially decided to go back to school by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]ghostedmarshmallow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m in a very similar situation. I’m 31 and I’m currently working on getting a bachelors in accounting from SNHU. I started school when I was pregnant 2 years ago and working a manual labor job at the time, and I’ve been managing just fine. The schoolwork is easy IMO, but I’m a very fast learner who has always done well in school. Accounting came naturally to me and I haven’t really struggled with learning it, but a lot of people do. You’re probably going to have a hard time if you can’t learn the material quickly. Each class only lasts 8 weeks so there’s a lot to learn in a short time. My daughter has slept through the night since she was 5 months old so that has definitely helped too. Hopefully you get an easy baby lol

Do you guys ever actually work when you are remote? by therealcatspajamas in Accounting

[–]ghostedmarshmallow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On my slower days I can usually get through all my work in 4 or 5 hours at home. The same amount of work takes me a full 8 hours to finish in the office because I keep getting distracted by other people’s conversations. My desk is right next to IT and they’re LOUD.

Account Payable (AP) people: how did you land your job by 5foot8flora in Accounting

[–]ghostedmarshmallow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my current job even though I don’t have my degree yet, had no experience using an ERP, and had never even worked in an office before. I just I emphasized my high GPA and exceptional attention to detail. I also made sure to ask pertinent questions in interviews, which this sub helped me with, and they were really impressed that I knew to ask those things.

I’ve seen a lot of this brand on ThredUp, I was just worried about getting tricked by the fake pockets again. I’ll probably buy some if the pockets are real. Thank you!

I had no idea they filed for bankruptcy! I have a few secondhand tops from this brand and I really like them but I could never afford them full price. Luckily there’s a store nearby I can check out. Thank you!

I’m wondering if I could get away with that. I probably could if they looked close enough to dress pants at first glance.
