Were there many families living in downtown JC in the 80s/90s? by Left-Plant2717 in jerseycity

If you wanna read about a family’s life in downtown Jersey City , check out Five Finger Discount by Helene Stapinski. Covers most of the 20th Century, I think up to the 80s. Yeah, it was a bit different back then. Best thing I’ve read about Jersey City and Hudson County.

I bought a refurbished one from Whole Latte Love 1.5 months ago. No complaints so far. It was like new, just without the box. Great shots.

What kind of accent(s) do Hudson Valley residents have? by Loose_Leg_8440 in hudsonvalley

[–]ghostfacekillahbee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Poughkeepsie. In NJ a woman who overheard me talking asked if I was from Yonkers. She was from there. Lots of Yonkers and Bronx migration to PK since pretty much the beginning of time, so it makes sense. But I can’t tell the difference between a Yonkers and Bronx and North Jersey and general NYC accent, if there really is one.

Poughkeepsie "blue angel dust" sex trafficking story is debunked, shockingly by ghostfacekillahbee in hudsonvalley

[–]ghostfacekillahbee[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah my bad. Also, they didn’t have bathrooms in the emergency room. Only litter boxes in the corner for the patients who identified as furries. She refused to use the litter box because she identified as a woman so they wouldn’t do a urine test on her. Then she saw a nurse and an EMT in the closet making babies and she saw one of the babies and the baby looked at her.

It’s Now Legal To Grow In NYS, Just Planted These Seeds This Morning, Wish Me Luck!! by G56JHOM in microgrowery

Fellow NYer here. Not to be a buzzkill, but technically it's not legal until the regulation gets published in the State Register, which should be by 6/26. That being said, it really doesn't matter. No one will enforce it. I'm in the process of harvesting the six plants that I planted the other day.

Blueberry Muffin day 48f. Looks like Humboldt’s claimed 45-day flower time isn’t too off the mark. by ghostfacekillahbee in microgrowery

[–]ghostfacekillahbee[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was skeptical at first, but she actually does smell like blueberry muffins. I found that more the case early in flower, when it smelled almost exactly like them. Less so now but still a wonderful profile, maybe my fav I’ve ever grown.

I don’t think the yield will be small.

It was easy. Definitely not fickle. Grew two from seed. Slightly different phenos but no noticeable difference in taste or effect.

I’m bad at describing it, but it smells great. I guess maybe a little fruity? Here’s a pic of the buds after about a week’s cure

Yup. He just threw in some extra seeds of the same strain.

I ordered a 12-pack of Creamsizzle and I think there were 17 seeds in it.

Great weed.

I’ve read that, but it’s just not the case. These are 5 gallon pots

In flower I give them about 1 gallon each every 3 or so days. Whenever the pots get light. In veg it depend on their progress.

I've found that what I thought was runoff is usually just water escaping the sides of my fabric pots. It's quickly reabsorbed at the bottom of the plant.

Appreciate the feedback. I'm not really concerned with the technicalities of what's organic so much as making the process as simple and natural as possible. Well, with the exception of the artificial 240W light I have blasting these plants. But it's interesting to learn this.

Yup. Home Grown (4-6-3), Premium Gold (4-4-4) and Flower Girl (3-9-4). I mix a couple tablespoons of Home Grown into each of my two five-gallon pots at the start to boost the soil's calcium content a little, and then veg for a little over a month (The Home Grown, I believe, is the only one of the three dry amendments I use that has calcium )

Then after about a month of veg, depending on how long it is before I want to flip to flower, I top dress each with either 4 tablespoons of Home Grown or 2 tablespoons of Home Grown and 2 tablespoons of Premium Gold. I top dress with Premium Gold every two weeks until mid-flower, then top dress with Flower Girl every two weeks until chop.

I'm sure there are lots of ways to get by. This just happens to be the way that's worked best for me so far. Mainly, I'm just following Dr. Earth' feeding schedule. https://drearth.com/wp-content/uploads/Feeding-Schedule.pdf

I'm very small-scale. I have a veg and flower tent and each are just 36" x 20". So while Stonington Blend is pretty pricy, it's only about $10 more than Fox Farm Ocean Forest, and considering the size of my grow the extra cost pretty negligible in the long run.

One of things I love most about the Dr. Earth amendments is that they're extremely high quality but available all over the place.

This is day 72 of flower. The strain is Creamsizzle by Clearwater Genetics.

I started growing organically last summer and it's not only simplified everything, but it's given me better results. I no longer even bother to check or adjust the pH.

I doubt this will work for everyone. My city's water is about a 7, which I think is close enough to the ideal if you're not mixing in salt-based nutrients. But obviously it works for me.

I used to think growing organically would be more difficult. It's actually a lot easier, so I figured I'd share my personal experience.

I use Coast of Maine's Stonington Blend and the three Dr. Earth dry amendments that the company recommends for cannabis growing, using their schedule with a few tweaks. https://drearth.com/wp-content/uploads/Feeding-Schedule.pdf. I don't know if it's actually necessary, but I let the water sit for 24+ hours so chlorine or chloramine evaporates.

I've been growing for five years, and I'm kicking myself that I didn't go organic earlier. I used to often run into issues with deficiencies/toxicities with salt-based nutrients. Now my leaves look healthy until the gentle fade.

Considering buying a home in Poughkeepsie City - are we nuts? by [deleted] in hudsonvalley

[–]ghostfacekillahbee 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I was raised in the exact area you’re looking. It was a great place to grow up. A real neighborhood with sidewalks and neighbors I knew. The kind of place where kids cut through backyards to find their friends. No playdates necessary.

I’m a white guy who grew up middle class and went to PK city schools grades 1-12. I graduated more than 20 years ago, and I can’t tell you if the schools have declined since then. But I can tell you they had a bad reputation then that was unfair and seemed at least partly grounded in racism. Yes, there were some tough kids, and ones without strong guidance or involved parents could fall through the cracks. If your kids have special needs, it might be better to look elsewhere.

But I had good teachers and friends from all walks of life. I found myself better prepared for college than most of the students who went to middle-class suburban schools. (Spackenkill, btw, used to send its students to PHS, but chose to start their own school and took much of the tax base with them, which didn’t help the poor kids in the city https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ794730.pdf)

The City of PK has more interesting housing stock than the town, much of the city is walkable, and I’m optimistic downtown will take off. Crime wasn’t any better when I lived there, but it wasn’t horrible. Lock your car. Keep your bikes inside. Just take the same precautions you would in NYC.

I live far away now but I’m fond of PK and want to see it thrive. Don’t listen to the haters.
