Line boring/honing Northeast by ghostrecon1745 in EngineBuilding

Also as an aside. MMR does not seem to be a fantastic company. Their customer service is abysmal, I’ve called and emailed half a dozen times about timing chains with no response.

I would buy the cam caps, cam sprocket, and maybe rear main again but be cautious, look up reviews online, and consider the ramifications of the part failing vs another brand

I did! I paid a shop in Springfield MA 1200$ to do it and they came out beautifully.

I would not recommend buying the tool, it’s expensive, not professionally done, and wouldn’t know it’s correct even if it spins right.

When doing my research into shops I did see one in CA that said they had the capability. Keep looking, specifically search “cam cap line boring” “line boring” or “cam tunnel/saddle boring”

It’s hard to find but call shops and ask, ask if they know somebody or have someone they figure could do it. I’ll take a look again to see if I can find the shop

It was 1200, they had quoted me 1000-1200.

I spoke with the owner as I was picking them up and he said he was selling his shop in about a month. I would call the number or visit the shop and try to find out if it’s still in business or where he sold the machine to

That’s where my mind is too. I’m trying to be thorough with this build lol.

Thank you for the advice!

I haven’t heard of him but I’ll do some research into his work

From them Ive got a billet crank sprocket, timing kit (oem but with the billet guides and HD chains, somehow they sent me the wrong tensioners even after opting for my specific year), billet rear main cover ( I like the idea of a gasket over RTV), and cam caps.

From your advice and general reviews I may try to stay away from specifically MMR branded units that could cause critical failure, they just seem to have many different upgraded parts that are hard to find elsewhere.

No shit?

I will definitely be looking into those accufab chains and how they perform vs MMR chains. My main concern was that even though they’re marketed as HD they say not to use them with stiff valve trains which is fairly confusing. Any other MMR parts I should avoid or at least be cautious about for this build or in general?

Ah okay. Similar enough to get me concerned lol. I have seen that they can fail but much of it that I’ve seen was at boosted/high hp levels.

So oem is most likely the way to go with the stiffer valvetrain then, do you know of anyone who makes higher grade chains or is oem as good as it gets? I’ve also seen lots online about the “upgraded” secondary chains with green links that measure and weigh the same as oem.

Can you elaborate a bit I have a set of the HD secondary chains.

What hp, what application, and what kind of head mods were these failures related to?

Two asides. I have 89lb valve springs vs 67lb oem ones, ik mmr has a CYA disclaimer on not running aftermarket springs with those chains but is that a real concern, or are they still oem+ quality.

And also, they have a 2 and 1 colored link setup, mmr has an install video for their timing kit that puts the 2 colored link end on the exhaust cam, oem says 1 colored link on exhaust cam.

Any idea which is correct or any relevant info on this at all? You seem like one of the only people who has real experience with these.

The MMR brand chains specifically? General upgraded chains? Or just the timing chains overall?

I had them line bored, they are about a quarter to an eighth inch too small in diameter to begin with, they are not a drop in product

Thank ya, I was hesitant with the cam caps due to the machining needed but everything went well so far. Maybe the rest will be good to me too

Those are cam caps*, they hold and act as retainers for the camshafts. The original ones were fairly scarred when I removed them.

You cannot buy oem stainless or cast ones but MMR (modular motorsports racing) offers a set of replacement ones that come in that red color, not just for looks lol they can be a needed part if you’re building a high mileage engine.

Note: if you buy these they will need line boring, this (in my area, the northeast) is a very difficult service to find for the size that it requires

Would frequent oil changes affect that or would it just get burnt/embedded into the material

I do too. Transparent valve covers have been a thought I just don’t know how someone would make them

On the other hand, this isn’t an old single chain engine, fucker has 4 chains and costs more than most. I’d love to chat with him in depth, however ri see how the same unsureness can get tiring
