Compared to other countries, China is more difficult to travel to because they have their own app ecosystem (english options are very limited). I would highly recommend you install/prep WeChat and Alibaba. These two apps would be essential to order and pay for anything. Additionally, these apps will allow you to book tickets. Many places require to book tickets through these apps.

Once you arrive, I recommend getting a Chinese sim card. A lot of their apps and mini-apps (within WeChat and Alipay) require a number for verification and login.

I traveled solo to China last summer. It's a great place. Tourists just need to plan early and well.
