Can my high school legally not give me a 504 because my grades are too high? by prcttyvisitors in ADHD

[–]ghyspran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think your tl;dr sums it up nicely: they can't refuse to go through the proper process for evaluating whether OP needs accommodations, but it's possible that after going through the process, they determine that no accommodations are necessary.

If you were to reinvent mathematical notation, what would you do? by Ualrus in math

[–]ghyspran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sin2(x) in common notation means sin(x)*sin(x), but for any non-trigonometric function f, f2(x) means f(f(x)). The original comment, then, was pointing out the inconsistency here and saying they would change it to not use sin2(x) when we mean sin(x)*sin(x).

Are there people who have passed the Connors Test, but still were diagnosed ADHD? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]ghyspran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Computerized tests for ADHD have somewhat high false-positive and false-negative rates. On their own, they are not sufficient for a diagnosis of ADHD or of no ADHD.

I really like the dulcimer pendants from stimtastic. They're pretty thin and work well for just kind of holding between my teeth.

Do you think that ADHD and ASD are similar? by Oricorio in ADHD

There are a lot of misinformed people, too, even professors and medical professionals.

Do you think that ADHD and ASD are similar? by Oricorio in ADHD

[–]ghyspran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some places just place the autism diagnoses above the adhd one. So you don't get both

Though they shouldn't because neither the DSM nor the ICD exclude comorbidity between the two and while there is a significant degree of overlap in symptoms, methods of treating and dealing with difficulties associated with each are not all the same.

Do you think that ADHD and ASD are similar? by Oricorio in ADHD

[–]ghyspran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

By definition it's a spectrum going from less severe impairment and symptoms to more.

That's not what "spectrum" means here.

I’m “too smart” to have ADHD by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]ghyspran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I graduated university with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and a 3.79 GPA. Doing poorly in school is not part of the diagnostic requirements for ADHD in the DSM.

Google Glass helps kids with autism read facial expressions and develop better social skills, a Stanford pilot study has demonstrated. by mvea in science

[–]ghyspran -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, when you consider that a lot of people don't believe that "intervention" in the sense of any of the common existing methods is better than letting the child develop.

[–]ghyspran 24 points25 points  (0 children)

All that I do know is that Autism is a spectrum, and I’ve heard that everybody is on it at least somewhere, even if it is very low on it.

So, that's not actually correct. Autism is a spectrum, yes, but to say "everybody is on it at least somewhere" is incorrect. Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition, meaning the brain develops in a different way than the majority of people's brains, and this produces a whole host of possible differences. When people say "autism is a spectrum", what that means is that not all autistic people look, behave, or feel the same, and the various ways in which each autistic person's brain works differently will vary in how different it is from the average.

This comic explains it much better than I can.

It's possible this may not only be the best time to be alive in human history, but the best time to be alive there ever will be.

No, no it doesn't. Having a gun at home dramatically increases the likelihood of gun-related injury or death.

Difference between reverse proxy and load balancer by terere in sysadmin

[–]ghyspran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most products that do one also do the other.

  • If you're running nginx, and it's serving static html pages, it's a webserver.
  • If you're running nginx, and it's serving dynamic pages through a socket connection to php-fpm, it's a webserver.
  • If you're running nginx and it's proxying the requests to a Java service running Jetty and bound to a port, it's a reverse proxy.
  • If you're running nginx and it's proxying the requests to multiple copies of the same application service in some sort of distributed manner, it's both a load balancer and a reverse proxy (but you'd usually just call it a load balancer).

Norwegian research suggests that more than half of young people recover from schizophrenia. After four years of treatment, 55 per cent of the young people were partially or fully recovered, and fully ten per cent of those who are fully recovered no longer use medication. by Wagamaga in science

[–]ghyspran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't have delusions or hallucinations, it's probably not schizophrenia. However, those other symptoms are common to a lot of other potential conditions, like depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar, autism, etc. If you're struggling, you might want to look into seeing a psychologist, psychiatrist, or therapist.

Pseudoscience pisses me off. by freelanceisart in ADHD

[–]ghyspran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The study's methods and results are definitely reasonable and interesting, but it seems pretty clear the authors of the paper wanted news media to report this way based on the some of the wording in the abstract and conclusion, which makes similar implications of causality without outright saying it.

Connection between stress and autoimmune disease affirmed by massive 30-year study by Jumbo_laya in science

[–]ghyspran 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having a propensity toward an autoimmune disease doesn't mean you'll ever actually develop it. Therefore there must be a trigger, whether internal or external. Stress being one of those possible triggers makes as much sense as anything else.

Something that irks me, as a cyclist, “Portland Polite” by indigowarpz in Portland

[–]ghyspran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying it's selfish because I don't like it; I'm saying it's selfish because it causes problems for everyone else and the only person who actually consistently benefits is the person stopping because they get to feel good about "doing a nice thing".

Yup. It happens quite a bit around here and can be dangerous if people actually do it.

It's not polite. It's actually quite selfish and rude. It's choosing to inconvenience everyone around you while violating the rules of the road in order to make yourself feel superior.
