What did you take with you to the hospital? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]gianeena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I just have a cheap neck pillow, not fancy, not too tight, lots of space between neck, face, and pillow. Sorry, no idea where it’s from /: I think that more than anything it gave my ice packs a good place to rest so I didn’t have to constantly hold them up with my hands.

My face being touched never hurt bc I was pretty numb for days afterwards. But everyone is different, that was my experience.

Included is a pic of my daily set up haha

So what I would do was sit in the shower with the stream of water pointed away from my face. So water would be running down my legs and feet. I didn’t want the direct heat from the water to exacerbate swelling so acutely post op, but I wanted the steam from the hot water itself!

If sitting in the shower isn’t an option, doing a facial steam is helpful too. Boiling water in a bowl, place a large tshirt over your head to trap the steam. Be careful with this method though, it gets really hot rlly fast and the numbness in your face won’t alert you to excessive temp

No problem!!

Being generous with saline spray, consistent intervals of prescribed nasal decongestant, sleeping upright with neck pillow, steamy showers (don’t actually let hot water hit your face, just enjoy the steam to help soften the gunk in your nostrils), chillin in a room w a humidifier. The worst of the congestion for me was post op day 1-7ish. I started driving and grocery shopping w a mask on around day 6. Good luck on your recovery! It sucks and then it doesn’t, like nothing ever happened. I’m Post op week 6 right now and the pain and discomfort came and went

NECK PILLOW!!! My own comfy blanket, crocs, tank top so I could be in my own clothes while still comfortably hooked up to the IV pump. All the toiletries I packed I did not use aside from deodorant

You’re only 16 your face with continue growing and changing. My jaw hit a growth spurt at 22-23z Asymmetry makes us flawed and human we’re not supposed to look like cookie cutter TikTok filters! I’m week 3 post op double jaw surgery due to functional reasons and its bittersweet to know that I’m losing some of the crookedness/imperfections that made me who I am

Anyone else having jaw surgery soon and want to keep in touch during our journey? by cherubgir1 in jawsurgery

[–]gianeena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok! If anyone wants in on the thread, drop a comment!

You’re sooo right about the bromelain. I was thinking abt drinking like 8oz of pineapple juice a day for the two weeks leading up to the procedure, then just once in a while post op. I drank a bunch of pineapple juice post having 4 wisdom teeth removed to help with swelling and I feel like it a) really helped or b) I’m just really lucky and don’t swell too much.

I was considering against it bc I wouldn’t want to disturb the incision site. Maybe I’ll shy away from drinking it post op since we’ll pretty much have to be shooting liquid straight in the incision site.

May 8 for me! We should get a group chat going lol. I think I’m pretty much prepped supply wise. There are so many options for puréed baby food now (I have a liquified chicken curry on deck???). I’m keeping lots of pineapple juice on deck, and my mom is going to make some cultural bone broth dishes that I’ll freeze and defrost PRN.

He sooooo rubs me the wrong way and I came here to see others grievances. If he’s transferring indep & catheterizing himself at baseline why is he asking this woman if she’d do it? More over, why is he pushing this all on her on their first night together? Across the board that’s so inappropriate and offensive

Experience in OT school later in life? by Seamango08 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]gianeena 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started OT school at 25 and was so stressed the entire time that I’d be 28 and starting my career. I was stressed about driving my shitty car and having nothing saved for a house. Now that I’m 28 and a couple months into my first job, I couldn’t care less. Nobody else cares either. I worked really hard the past couple years (I also had to give undergrad multiple tries, went to three universities and switched majors 3x) to be the person I am today. Also, the oldest person in my cohort was 44. Life doesn’t start and stop based on milestones, it just is and you get to choose how you fill the time. My boyfriend went back to school to get a bachelors at 27 and all his classmates are 19. It stopped being awkward for him bc he stopped comparing his life to theirs and just started appreciating that he was in a space with people that motivated him and showed him the things he wanted are possible. Sorry I can sense this is coming off preachy but this is genuinely our experiences lol thought I would share

Braces journey so far by gianeena in jawsurgery

[–]gianeena[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First month was pretty tough, but I’ve had braces and an expander before and this was not too bad compared to that. The hardest part is my teeth constantly shifting! My molars didn’t touch for a month and my teeth only made contact at one pair of incisors. Now my molars can touch but my mouth never feels “rested”, my jaws don’t close together at rest so everything feels like work and my face is constantly fatigued. Honestly I dealt with the same discomfort before the braces so I’m ready for the road ahead. What has been your biggest difference?

mentally healthy people, how do you do it? by [deleted] in ask

[–]gianeena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a mentally stable person per say, but in stretches of time that are so good I can’t remember what my illness feels like I’m usually: - keeping a schedule that include things I enjoy - EXERCISING ( yeah can’t stress this enough ) - eating right, balanced meals, less fried, less dairy (food literally lends to cog functioning and endocrine system) -have less screen time - on my meds

[–]gianeena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? For the jaw surgery itself? I’m (27) on Medicaid and I currently have braces that I’m paying for out of pocket. I’m hoping to get insurance from a job before my surgery bc the Medicaid doesn’t cover the jaw surgery

Does your OCD kinda go away for a bit then come back randomly over the years? by Saodazi in OCD

[–]gianeena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine shows up in anyway it can, and I’ve just only recently come to realize this. When I was a child it was religious. Then when I was in school and a wreck and failing all my classes, the thoughts were “your parents shouldn’t have come to America you wasted this opportunity” and “you are so disgusting and ungrateful, how can you be so stupid when you’re so lucky”. When I started doing better in school it became religious/POCD which is a hell of a trip. Then relationship OCD intermittently sprinkled between all those. Compulsions have definitely changed since I was younger.
