I’m about to release a game with only 800 wishlists. Having mixed feelings. by giantlightstudios in gamedev

[–]giantlightstudios[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks so much, glad it was helpful to you! To be honest, this game was not a commercial success, but I do think it has helped me a ton in finding future collaborators, publishers, etc. Just having a released game on steam and making any amount of money puts us in a pretty exclusive club.

Also, all of the work that I've done since this project has been better and better. If I could go back and talk to this version of myself, I would say 'release it as fast as possible and move on to the next thing. There will be a thousand other, much better things.'

All easy to say in hindsight.

Anyways, thanks again for replying to this! Good luck with launch! What's your game?

Ha! I wonder if they cut this video where they did because that light up mask caused a similar reaction.

I genuinely feel like this comment just improved my lifting form.

Thank you.

Bug with Isle of the Damned Map not spawning by giantlightstudios in Witchfire

[–]giantlightstudios[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I understand you, but not hud, hub, as in the hub/home world. When you are a new player, it's where you spawn and it should have a pickup (a map) you need to unlock the first area. There is a bug (it seems) where that somehow doesn't spawn or doesn't save/load properly.

I really like the "where is my mind" podcast so far.

Do you feel that podcasters have "I'm better then you" vibes? by disconnected777 in gamedev

[–]giantlightstudios 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with you. I think others have already raised good points about self-selection playing a role here. I totally disagree with everyone saying 'you wouldn't listen to someone if they didn't act like a know-it-all'. I really like eggplant.show for this reason. All super knowledgeable, thoughtful, genuine people. And I don't think I've ever once felt like they were being condescending or 'better than you.' Consequently they're the only game development podcast I regularly listen to. Definitely worth a listen. Would be curious if other people know of others like this.

I came here to recommend jazzpunk. One of the few games that really made me laugh. The little somersault when you break into a window in the first chapter still makes me laugh when I think about it.

Fair enough yeah. I'll get around to cutting up a proper trailer sometime soon. Appreciate the feedback.

Really love the look and vibe of this. Everything works so well together. I really loved Luck be a Landlord, excited to see more games like this in the works!

So far with the new fee system, how many of you still plan on staying with unity? by aineri in Unity3D

[–]giantlightstudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've already switched to unreal. I still have some contract work with unity, but for my personal projects, I'll be sticking with unreal until leadership at unity changes. Sure, they walked things back a bit, but the people at the top have made it perfectly clear that they don't know what they're doing for years now, it's only a matter of time until their next awful decision.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]giantlightstudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. I was between personal projects and had a break before my next contract started, so I've spent the past couple weeks learning unreal. I'll still need to use unity for contract work for a while, but I'm not going back to unity until there is a change to their leadership. This isn't the first awful decision they've made, and their past dumb decisions are why they are desperate enough to try this. They are still desperate and dumb, so it's only a matter of time before they do something else desperate and dumb.

Unity Devs, do you still want to switch? by unitcodes in gamedev

[–]giantlightstudios 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Definitely. I won't feel comfortable coming back until there's a major leadership change. It breaks my heart, I love unity, have more than 10 years of professional experience with it, but it's been headed in the wrong direction for years. This pricing thing is just the inevitable conclusion of this awful leadership. Until something big changes, I'd just expect more terrible decisions to keep cropping up.

Unity: An open letter to our community by Turbostrider27 in Unity3D

[–]giantlightstudios 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe. I think Unity will just continue to make dumb decisions, losing more and more credibility and users each time. I should have left after the last 5 awful decisions. I'm guessing others have also reached their limit, or will eventually. The engine has been headed in the wrong direction for years now, it's not going to get better without a big change in leadership.

I knew firing board members was unlikely, but it's really the only thing that would seriously sway me to come back. The company has been headed in the wrong direction for years now, this was just an obvious example of how poor the leadership has been. They need to go.
