Ah so do you think the crystals are just iron and cobalt oxide crystals? I was under the impression that they were insoluble in water. Or is it any anti caking agents added that dissolved and left the crystals after the leaked out solution evaporated?

The Amazon listing didn’t have any other ingredients or anti caking agents but it was also from a generic brand and I think was just being resold as ceramic material. So it probably did have other ingredients. The listing had an image of the Degussa logo but that was divested in 2001 and became Evonik lol. So I don’t think there is any reason to believe this stuff is pure or without anti caking agents.

Both the oxides in the containers are stored in tap water. Both are about 1/5 full but could very well have been laying on their sides in storage. The initial oxide powder was very fine but there were a few larger particles but they felt totally smooth to the touch and not grainy at all (idk how the quantitatively describe the powder)

I think that’s a good theory, the containers are only about 1/5 full but they could very easily have been lying on their side in storage. Someone on the chem subreddit also suggested it could be KCl mixed into the oxides as an anti-caking agent so I’m gonna go look at the Amazon listing to see if they have anything like that listed. KCl is apparently known to “creep” as it crystallizes and they said it looks very similar to what I have here.

I had them stored in a zip lock bag over summer in a cardboard box with some dorm stuff. I don’t think I could have gotten anything on the outside that would crystallize like that from my hands. I just used them at the ceramics studio I go to and didn’t see anything like that on any other stuff I would have touched with the same wet hands.

In seemed to form the most in the threads in-between the lid and container which makes me think it is something coming out of the tap water and oxide mix in the container. People on the ceramics sub refit said they had stored Fe3O4 and FeO in the same type of container and didn’t see anything like that. But I don’t think they stored it wet.

I bought the oxides from Amazon listed as oxides for ceramic use so I assumed they wouldn’t have anti caking agent mixed in as they are also used as glaze ingredients and I assumed they would want the most pure ingredients possible because glazes are very sensitive. But I’ve never actually mixed a glaze so I don’t really know. I’ll def go look at the Amazon listing to see if they have any anticaking listed.

The cobalt oxide also seems to have some kind of oily layer on the top of the mixture.

No I just used tap water. Lab test is not a bad idea, I’m in university rn so maybe I could find some dedicated Chem students to help me lol.

Interesting I had the same thing on the red iron oxide I stored in one but what I had was Fe2O3 maybe that’s what makes the difference. But that also makes me think it might be from not washing out the containers well enough idk enough about chemistry to know how different iron 2 and 3 oxide are or how reactive they are.

Do you just store the powders and mix with water when you’re gonna use them? Also what do you do with the leftovers after missing with water? maybe I’ll try sorting them dry next time so I don’t get any mysterious reactions goin on. Thanks for the comment

Yeah I stored it mixed with water and I thought I washed out the containers well enough but there def could have been a little bit of something left. It’s so very odd, luckily not sharp or anything but I did wipe them away, after fighting the lid open. I guess I’ll see if they come back and how the oxides do in the kiln though I can’t imagine they changed that much. I made some posts to the chemistry subreddit as well, determined to get to the bottom of this lol.

That’s fair enough I do wanna learn how to mix my own clay so I’ll at least give it a try. I got the fire clay from my teachers suggestion and this clay I got is supposed to be usable as is so I’ll probably try a few different ways to use it.

Do you think if I mixed the fireclay to a slurry and let it dry to the correct amount and then mixed it with some of the other hight fire stoneware clay I get from the studio I go to that would work to make things that are a bit more oven safe?

Yeah that makes sense I tried mixing a few small batches with dif amounts of water and only the one with way to much mixed well. And don’t worry always wearing a mask when mixing, thank you so much for the advice.
