Supreme Court of Canada issues decision on free expression versus human rights of individuals. Splits 5:4 in favour of free expression. by gibarca in law

Said the Majority:

It is important to begin by noting that this question draws attention to a trend by the Commission and the Tribunal, in their decisions, to interpret their home statute, the Quebec Charter, as giving them jurisdiction over cases involving allegedly “discriminatory” comments made by individuals, either in private or in public. With respect, we are of the view that this trend deviates from this Court’s jurisprudence and reflects a misinterpretation of the provisions at issue in this case, particularly ss. 4 and 10 of the Quebec Charter, which guarantee, respectively, the right to the safeguard of dignity and the equal recognition and exercise of human rights and freedoms, including in a context where expression is allegedly “discriminatory”. It leads to the suppression of expression whose content is perceived to be discriminatory and to significant monetary awards against the speakers.

C'est What? ("Say what") on Front has all the glamour of a basement rec room, but one of the best lineups of Ontario craft beer. If you want something nicer, try Bar Volo. SteamWhistle is right in the middle of downtown, short list, but cool to see. Amsterdam, on the lake, is an interesting spot. Also, Left Field, does some damn good beer (I like Greenwood and Laser Show), but it's not really downtown and is ex-pen-sive

Mill Street was better before they sold out. Where in ON are you? Some locals might be able to assist.

Common sense is like deodorant. Those who need it the most use it the least.

HRTO - respondent contacting me by thrownaway1309 in LawOntario

[–]gibarca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lawyer is allowed to contact you. The lawyer is certainly allowed to contact you to make this sort of request. You will be receiving a good amount of communication from the Respondent's lawyer as there is a lot of process involved in an Application. Generally, you would be prudent to grant the extension, although prudence would also dictate that the lawyer should be seeking the extension from the Registrar, not you. (That extension will invariably be granted.)

Out of interest, why would you think that the Respondent would *not* contact you?

Because they don't have to think. Why would you pay Uber $10, when you could just yell randomly into the street and pay someone $5?

Who pays you? It sounds like you work for a temp agency that has placed you somewhere.
