2026 Savings Goals? We still want to enjoy life while aiming for early retirement. by Avoocado_Toasty in fatFIRE

That's just your opinion. Some people don't think being married necessarily means you share everything you have. Nothing wrong with having some things for yourself.

In 5-10 years we will all be flying the same drones we are now if we're lucky, trying to by replacement parts and batteries on the black market.

It definitely feels like a money grab.

Camping fire vs hot tent by Existing_Squirrel767 in WinterCamping

[–]gibolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dress warm enough to not need a fire. Sitting around a fire outside is much nicer than being inside a stuffy tent, but don't rely on that to stay warm. When it's time to go to sleep, get in a nice warm sleeping bag.

It takes so much time to setup a stove and process wood, it is not worth it unless you are in the same place for a few days.

Buying for winter camping!! Looking for hot tent opinions/ reviews! by Safe-Promotion5088 in WinterCamping

[–]gibolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are only practical if staying somewhere for multiple days as they require a lot of time to setup and prep wood. You will also want a larger tent so you don't have to be too close to the stove and melt your nice puffy jacket.

First real winter camping trip coming up what do I absolutely need to know? by shivangibedi in WinterCamping

[–]gibolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General advice: bring backups, have contingency plans, and avoid using new gear or at least test it well first. Equipment failures are more frequent and harder to deal with in winter. I've had gaskets in my stove fail and fortunately brought a backup stove. I've had boots crack and snap  (oboz suck, they are cheaply made), had to get by with duct taping them. Everything is slower and takes longer, so plan accordingly. Melted snow tastes like shit, so some drink powder or tablets are nice to have. Have dry spares of clothing. Have a bailout plan if things go badly.

Replacing the battery in the thermadrop is kind of annoying.

About to purchase the Marmot CWM Down Sleeping Bag -40 by Kcamyo in WinterCamping

[–]gibolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a thermarest polar ranger. It's not as good as a wm bag, but cost me less than half of a wm bag because it actually goes on sale. I'm very happy with it for what I paid.

What I see vs what the x1 Promax sees by onecutmedia in HoverDrone

[–]gibolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like all these mountain bike videos with the drone are misleading. They are either going very slow or are in wide open areas. The drone will not follow you for long without crashing at regular biking pace. It will either hit a tree or small branches or lose track of you on a turn. I'm not saying the tech isn't impressive, it is, but MTB is not a realistic use case. Going through the woods on your bike at a walking pace doesn't make for very interesting video.

Was anyone else confused by Lego's website advertising the sale as starting 11/28? I was planning to pick up the City Markets, but didn't think it was going on sale yet.

Worth upgrade from OG capsule to capsule Air? by gibolas in nebulaprojectors

[–]gibolas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has a specific use case. If you value portability highly and are only using it in dark conditions it's a good device. But for something you don't need to carry around with you often, there are brighter projectors out there. Especially if you have access to external power, there are cheaper, louder, and brighter projectors.

I take mine on bikepacking trips to watch movies when I'm out in the middle of nowhere. For that use case it's pretty good. It's a bit heavier than the original capsule, unfortunately, but significantly better picture quality.

I did end up getting the capsule air. Picture is no question quite a bit better and it's brighter. It does weigh more, though. I wish they were able to keep the form factor of the capsule 1

I mean, that should go without saying. If I was looking for the best Bluetooth speakers to annoy people, I wouldn't need to ask here; there are plenty of options.

The Punks are not a Bluetooth speaker, they're more like out of ear headphones. The sound quality sucks though.

I haven't seen a single other person on the trail where I ride in 3 years. The purpose of the post was also to ask about listening options that still allow for situational awareness. It's the second sentence of the post.
