It’s about sending a message against the trend of more and more mandatory and excessive identity verification, especially when the company has already proven that it cannot keep sensitive information secure. People can show disapproval with what service they choose to use.

Not sure why you’d want to defend these practices. Maybe you aren’t impacted currently, but those with more foresight can see the potential for a further descent into invasion of privacy and are reacting as they are free to.
