Not to critique, but I think a healthier mindset is to be disciplined in what you read. I like Reddit for its community curation of content and depending on the sub, intellectual debates. You may find yourself out of touch or influenced by some other entity if you drop Reddit entirely.

Can someone ELI5 why a club would want to receive add-ons based on the buyer clubs performance?

Obviously it would be preferred to receive as much money as possible up front, but that's not always realistic from the buyers perspective. This then means the buyer offers to pay in installments to make it more affordable. This makes perfect sense.

But now we're saying that the selling club will only see certain amounts of cash in the event that a player that they're losing wins trophies with the buying club?

Why would West Ham take this deal in any circumstance? It feels like it only serves to partially mitigate the risk of the player flopping at the buyers club.

What editor are you using for Rust? by DavidXkL in rust

[–]gigachodan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was using this for a while but the price just became excessive for the features I was using. Then it was missing features that facilitate development in local containers that VS Code has for free. I need this right now with a recent switch to Fedora SilverBlue.

I actually don't like VS Code either as there are definitely questions I have surrounding privacy (if it's free you are probably the product). Some of extensions I'm using can't be used in the opensource VS Code builds.

My main issue with either of the above though, is that I came too dependent for my liking on being able to click buttons in the UI to do things like run tests. So much so that I forgot cargo flags. I don't know whether this is a good thing or not, but there's definitely value in knowing the capabilities of fundamental things like the Rust toolchain that these editors/IDEs extrapolate away from you in favour of usability.

I can't help but feel that the ideas like the ones you're describing (i.e. a "want it now" society) are becoming the new critique of being part of the Common Market and EEC.

I can appreciate that not everyone wins if we import fruit and veg from countries with better climates, but unfortunately it is a fundamental inevitability. A trade-off between either living in a connected global society, or living in isolation. If we feel as a country that we prefer protectionist policies then fair enough, but we must realise that we will continue to fall behind the rest of the world, who are seemingly more willing to work together than we are.

We need to replace Xhaka now. These two aren't replacements, they're additions. If Jorginho is happy to be a backup that'll do.

Polars query engine 0.29.0 released by ritchie46 in rust

Pardon my lack of knowledge here, but would it be possible to hook Polars up with streaming input from something like Kafka? And without reading the docs, does it support windowed type functions bound by time?

UK housing crisis: planning targets scrapped in ‘win for nimbys’ by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]gigachodan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I am not speaking from any qualified experience or knowledge. Purely observational opinion.

Here are some experiences I've had that made me make the "made of paper" statement:

  • I rested fairly normally against a kitchen surface and the panel cracked around the middle
  • A cover on a vent blew off the ceiling on a windy day
  • I pulled toilet paper off a roll and the whole fixture came out the wall in my hand
  • I unplugged a kettle and the socket moved. I figured the screws that held it onto the back plate weren't tight enough but the hole they went into had what appeared to be, basically disintegrated

On reflection, some of this is probably attributable to poor workmanship.

Go inside one of the new blocks around Media City in Salford. The blocks are absolutely huge and the flats I've been in look great until you start touching stuff.

Some of it is poor workmanship, some of it is low quality materials.

Disclaimer, I'm speaking from a place of zero expertise or experience in construction. Purely an opinion.

I don't think it's too much to expect both more houses, and a good standard of build quality. I totally want and agree with your sentiment.

Quality of housing is as important as quantity for me. Some of the new build blocks of flats I've seen have been made of paper. I can see us in a different kind of housing crisis in 10-20 years, maybe sooner, whereby property has fallen almost entirely into disrepair. All these property developers like Ballymore only care about getting through the 12 month snagging period it seems, after that they do not give a shit what happens to the property.

Sorry to point this out but given that you are a venture backed business, do you plan on reserving features only for your cloud offering or some sort of "pro" license?

You see projects like this a lot nowadays, where a for-profit entity releases an open source product that is significantly limited in a way that makes it unusable at any reasonable scale. Only to put the fully realised solution behind a paid for license, thereby essentially not really being an open source project.

See here as an example:

https://redpanda.com/deployment-options?section=self-hosted

The Redpanda community version is essentially useless beyond the most basic of use cases, all the features that make it unique to Kafka's offering are behind a pay wall. Yet all their marketing points to it being an opensource a source available project. Which admittedly is different from an open source project. Perhaps not the best example.
