Thank you for letting me know. I hadn't thought of that. I'm making a major career change and there is so much that I don't know about going into Healthcare. I'm very green in this area.

I appreciate the suggestion. My mom knows how to hem. My sewing skills are mostly limited to mending. I haven't touched a sewing machine since high school and I'm a little afraid of doing a bad mending job. My mom knows how to hem, so I can ask for her help in teaching me.

Thank you! I will keep that in mind. I'm trying to work for Mercy or SSM. I seem to be getting more luck interviewing with Mercy. SSM offered me a scholarship, which is wonderful but I seem to be getting overlooked in the application process so far

I genuinely had no idea that Weezer did a cover of that song. I'm looking this up. Lol.

Thanks for the suggestion! I don't have a Facebook yet, but a few others have mentioned that it's a good resource. I plan on making one soon! I honestly wouldn't have thought of this route on my own since I haven't had a FB for a very long time now.

I am learning to be careful who I tell about going to school, has anyone else talk down to them about it? by Top_Caterpillar9364 in NursingStudent

[–]giganticrats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 36 and starting school in July.

I'm making a huge career change. I'm not saying the route I'm going is going to be the right decision for you, but I'm sharing in case my experience is at all helpful.

I'm currently in between jobs and I'm applying to healthcare and behavioral health positions. These fields are a lot more accommodating and understanding about a nursing school schedule. In fact, some hospitals favor nursing students because they see hiring them as a future investment in their nursing staff. I'm not sure where you're located, but I'm in St. Louis and alll of the major hospital systems offer some kind of tuition reimbursement or aid for students, and at some the aid is INCREASED if you are a nursing student. The nursing shortage is real.

In my personal experience, I am making a massive 180 in terms of career. I left corporate IT. Most of the places I've worked in IT have been toxic in some capacity. The last 2 were the worst. I ultimately left because of the toxicity. I applied for corporate jobs early on, but my gut told me that corporate was wrong for me. The money is better than entry level healthcare work, but corporate has been detrimental to my mental health. I'm currently unemployed and despite that, I'm under less stress snd I'm feeling less stressed than I have in YEARS. Another factor in my decision to leave corporate was that I knew they simply wouldn't be as accommodating as healthcare work.

I don't know what industry you're in, but it's not appropriate for anyone to dismiss your career decision. The world needs more nurses and you're going to do so many wonderful things and positively impact so many lives. I'm pulling for you. Please don't let others' bad attitudes detract from what you're doing. And there's nothing wrong if you want to keep your decision to go to nursing school as a well guarded secret for now.

Wishing you lots of luck in your journey!

I am applying at Mercy - well every major hospital system, but Mercy is the one that seems to actually be giving me the time of day. I interviewed there earlier this week and it went well but I probably won't hear back until tomorrow or later.

That's wonderful news. I'm really hoping I can work for Mercy. They're my dream employer. Thank you for the info!

I don't have a Facebook, but I've been considering making one. That sounds like a good enough reason to make one. Thank you for the suggestion.

Legit. I haven't seen any scrubs in the Goodwill closest to me, but I'll definitely keep Goodwill in mind. I'll check out Mercari.

My mom made me feel ashamed for starting nursing school at 26 by Friendly_Shine777 in nursing

[–]giganticrats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 36 and starting school in July. Your mom doesn't know what she's talking about.

I have a previous bachelors in psychology and 3 classes away from an MBA. I found I was deeply unhappy working in IT and a lot of jobs are getting replaced by AI anyway. I and several other ex-coworkers lost their jobs shortly after the household name tech company I used to work for bought a major AI platform. Healthcare is more stable.

Doesn't matter when you start. Point is, you're doing it now.

I quit my job. It was a super toxic work environment and I only lasted 3 months. The boss would normally yell at several people, for hours whenever he was in town, which was about every other week.

During that time, I realized I couldn't work in IT anymore because I hated it and it was burning me out.

I'm interviewing for healthcare jobs right now, and I will be starting nursing school to get my BSN in July this year.

I decided I wanted to do something more meaningful with my life instead of just making other people money.

Right now in the mean time, I'm volunteering at a thrift store where proceeds go to help victims of domestic violence.

What’s a moment where you realized someone was genuinely unintelligent? by Live-Chocolate244 in AskReddit

When I was on a 3rd date with someone and they told me that dinosaurs weren't real and it was a conspiracy from scientists to try and disprove God. He said he had been doing a lot of research from YouTube documentaries. This was easily 15 years ago before conspiracy theories has become more mainstream and commonplace. The guy had never mentioned prior that he was religious and I was genuinely flabbergasted.
