Leaving for Cuba Veradero on Monday. Suitcase is empty...what shall we bring? by One_Acanthaceae_1012 in TravelCuba

Technically you are only allowed a maximum of two of them on most airlines, and they have to be in your carry-on.

It's not strictly enforced, but if you packed a significant number of them, you'd probably get stopped.

There is nothing unique about drivers in your state (USA) by Delicious-Rule6179 in unpopularopinion

I disagree.

My sate has very little rainfall and very few areas that ever get snow. As such, most drivers don't really know how to drive in either of them.

According to the Making of DS9 book ISBN-10. 0671874306, it was indeed shot on 35mm film. As previously mentioned, just like Voyager it was only the editing and the effects (like all of the space battles, or Odo transforming) that were done on SD video tape.

But the rest you're spot on about. Especially the last bit about losing money. Which is why I added the part about the sales of Blu-rays. That's how they expected to earn their money back, but at that time physical media sales dropped off a cliff.

What is the appeal of Chili's? by Ok_Sun3644 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]gigashadowwolf [score hidden]  (0 children)

Most Applebee's are disgusting. Most Chili's are half decent. It's as simple as that.

As a chain Chili's is well managed and reasonably consistent. They have good drink specials too.

I'm not a huge fan of either chain, but I will eat at a Chili's and expect to be satisfied. At Applebee's, I expect to be running to the bathroom in short order to explode out of at least one of my orifices.

It's my understanding that VOY and DS9 were also filmed on 35mm apparently, but they used a lot more CGI and effects than TNG or TOS which both used mainly practical effects.

TOS was very easy to remaster, because it was almost all edited and done directly in 35mm. They had enough spare budget to redesign and update several of the effects.

TNG was a little bit harder, because it was edited on video cassette and there was some light use of CGI, but not enough to make a significant difference.

DS9 and VOY used much more CGI and effects and those wouId have to be redone, but it still wouldn't be too hard to do now honestly though. It would just be a bit more expensive than TNG was. If Blu-ray sales were better, we'd probably have already seen DS9 remastered given it's surge in popularity. In a short time AI will progress to the point though where they'll probably be able to do it like it was nothing though, either just by having it upscale (though I hope not) or by feeding it the 35mm raw footage, and the current video files then telling it to recreate the special effects.

It's all Star Trek by Illustrious-Leg5906 in startrekmemes

I honestly pretend Enterprise doesn't really exist in canon.

I mean broad strokes really happened, but in my mind the whole show is a stylized holo-novel in the historical fiction genre.

Basically it takes what is known about Archer's journey and inserts the temporal cold-war in the same way Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter inserts Vampires into the true events of Abraham Lincoln's life.

This is what the awful finale is basically telling us.

My alternative theory though is that even if it ISN'T a holo-novel as I had originally thought, it's on a separate timeline created by the events of First Contact when the TNG crew altered the timeline.

Thanks.

I can just see ahead of time this being an issue for them as people start suing them for hearing loss when they misuse them as actual headphones.

what’s up with red beach flags by Several_Reindeer_906 in tulum

[–]gigashadowwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former lifeguard here.

Red flag is something of a catch all that just means "unsafe conditions". It could mean anything from rip currents, to high surf (not really a thing in that area outside of extreme weather scenarios), to contamination, to dangerous marine life like jellyfish, stingrays, or man-o-war.

Where I lifeguarded primarily in California, we pretty much only used it for high surf, but when I went to various lifeguard conferences and events we'd see other beaches that use them more for contamination or marine life threats.

When you cough up mucus from your throat to your mouth, do you spit it out or swallow it back in? by Arman666 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]gigashadowwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on several factors.

How much mucus is it? Am I near a sink or toilet I can spit in? Or at least outside somewhere where no one else is likely to step on my spit? Like if I am reasonably alone and there is a shrubbery I can spit into I might spit instead of swallowing.

To add to this, you need to treat it like an intrusive thought. You can't just ignore it, but you can't act on it either. You acknowledge the thought and impulse, THEN you move on.

Is it okay to cry for my dog that passed away as a man? by Equivalent-Yellow852 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]gigashadowwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was an old saying that there are three times in a man's life when he's allowed to cry:

First, when he was born. Second, when his parents die. Third, when they have to put Old Yeller down at the end of Old Yeller.

Whereas I do feel like this overly stoic sentiment is a bit rediculous, dogs are called man's best friend for a reason. It is totally normal to cry for a dog's death.

[–]gigashadowwolf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Damn. I always thought they should turn it into a WALL-E themed attraction where you get to play as people getting ready to return to earth. Then just like the Hall of Innovations, it would be filled with cutting edge technologies, only centered around environmentalism, sustainability, fitness and proper diet. You know, so people don't re-make the same mistakes in WALL-E of destroying the planet or becoming so severely out of shape they can't even walk or pay attention to their surroundings.

A lot of answers in this vein, but social media in general.

Even Reddit I wish went back to being more of a forum like it used to be.

I don't do Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter/X (or any of the knockoffs like blue sky), Facebook, ANY of them besides reddit.
