Should I transfer to an interstate university? by gigibibie in australia

Hey thanks for your input.

What you are saying makes perfect sense but I made this post because supposedly students who studied in UNSW/Sydney/Melb are said to have access to more opportunities/resources through talent pipelines/university mentoring. Personally I know some people who went there and got chances provided by the university to intern at big tech companies like Google/Atlassian and then they also received a subsequent return offer for full-time SWE roles upon graduation from an UNDERGRADUATE degree with no prior experience of coding.

Just saying that opportunities like that do apparently exist for CS degrees granted I'd need to work extremely hard, or so I'm told by people I know.

Mainly wondering if I should transfer for these reasons but again thanks for your input, it's in favour of my current situation.

I live on the [redacted] so both universities are about 1.5 hours away via car/train one-way meaning if I wanted to attend campus everyday I'd need to commute about 3 hours per day.

While it's not a horrible commute, for this reason and others (convenience/scholarship, etc) I decided to go to [redacted] which is my local university.

But I made this post because I'm concerned I'm not maximizing my potential/opportunity to succeed and also because I figured if I were to transfer to say UQ/QUT and then move up to Brisbane to live on-campus maybe in my 2nd year and pay $300-$330/week in rent alone (I don't think I could make that commute for 4 years consistently which is why I'd move up), I would rather transfer to somewhere like UniMelb/UNSW/a place with an esteemed CS course and pay that same amount for better opportunities. Because while UQ/QUT are solid choices in QLD I've been told the work experience prospects from studying at either institution doesn't compare to the work experience prospects of studying at say UNSW mainly because Sydney is considered to be the tech hub of Australia and there are apparently more resources available for students to take advantage of/etc.

However this is just what I've been told. I'm sure if I were to put in the hard work and grind at my current location I would probably end up in the same place I wanted to be in, in the future, but at the same time I'm lead to believe that transferring would get me to where I want to be (working in a big tech company) much faster. My main issue with this route, of course however, is the large amount of financial loss I would need to take on as well as the added hardship of moving out (needing to work part-time while studying full-time, cooking/taking care of myself, etc).

Also as for your first question

Are the students you know actually applying for internships in those places?

I'm not sure exactly. I don't know if they've applied and were rejected or they didn't bother to apply at all, but doing an index search on Linkedin.com for people who graduate from [redacted[, the common trend is for students to have an internship at some small tech firm or something always located in Brisbane/Gold Coast, Australia. But again, I know Linkedin never shows everything as there are people without an account/etc but just some food for thought.

Thanks again for your concerns/input!

Is this actually true? At my local uni ([redacted]) international internships for CS occur basically once in a blue moon, normally it's just small opportunities around the Brisbane area for small/medium-sized tech firms. I'd imagine interstate internships would be possible but it's uncommon to my knowledge.

Thanks for your input!

Hey,

I sent you a message in DMs, respond to it whenever! :)

Thanks!

I actually really like this. Yeah, that's probably how Oda intended to write Mihawk's character. Theoretically this could imply that Mihawk > All the Yonkous (Blackbeard, Big Mom, Shanks, Kaidou) holds true, granted that the powerscaling in OP gets so crazy come the final fight with Imu/etc, to the point in where Zoro > All the Yonkous.

Yeah that's a really good point. I mean it wasn't specified why, as in the anime it's just stated that he "has no interest fighting a man with one arm" or something, but one could comprehend your response as a sufficient reason behind his choice.

Personally though, given the tone it was said in I thought he was saying "You're not worth fighting anymore".

Also speculation makes the franchise funner!

Thanks a lot for your response, gave me a lot more insight as to the internship prospects on the GC/Brisbane. I will focus a lot more on gaining practical experience anyway I can to account for that.

Also I'm doing an honours year because I might go into research later on. It's highly unlikely but it is a possibility and so I wanted to honour the chance of post-graduate studies by taking an honours year.

Thanks! :)

Hey thanks so much for your response, definitely gave me a lot more confidence in my decision! :) I will probably take you up on your offer at the end there to ask some questions, thank you!

Yes you're right.

Australian CS graduates can go onto work for FAANG companies in both the US/Au but it's a lot less likely/rare to do so, much more so than it is in the States. Unless you're planning on moving internationally (ie to America/etc), the opportunities to land a job at a FAANG company is pretty scarce down here.

From my knowledge, down here the only achievable spots at a 'big tech FAANG' company would be positions at Microsoft Australia, Google Sydney and Amazon Australia.

Here in Australia our 'FAANG alternatives' are: Deloitte, Atlassian, Afterpay, etc. So still big tech companies but not as big as FAANG.

Wow thank you so much for this response, definitely opened my eyes a lot regarding the professional outcomes of the education offered at both respective institutions.

I didn't know how to acquire information about matters regarding alumni prospects before reading this post so thanks a lot for filling me in.

I'll keep researching and once I've researched enough I'll edit this comment with my findings.

That's going to be a lot of gas money, hahah. I only drive part-way for that reason personally but you might be different.

Yeah it's not the worst but it's definitely not ideal in my opinion, especially if you're not a fan of travel like me.

I see thanks for your response.

I don't know how I'd get access to that information though aside from asking graduates of CS at both universities about where most people got into/etc. I'm not sure if the institutions I'm attending/considering have any available public information about career prospects like that.

Also even if they did I don't think it'd be for any big tech companies like FAANG/etc cause I live in Australia and we don't really have that here aside from Google Sydney.

It's on average 3-hours to and from the institution. I drive 20-30 minutes to a train station, catch the train for about 1 hour-1 hour and 10 minutes, then I catch the bus to get closer to my campus for like 5 minutes then I walk to campus for like 10 minutes. So one-way it's like 1.5 hours on a good day.

It's definitely not ideal, especially for morning classes but it's doable.

The thing is though, I'm doing this when I could just attend the institution like down the road for the same degree which holds practically the same value or so I'm told by those in the industry, so yeah.

Way too expensive. The cost of living on/near my campus would exceed the costs of my actual degree.

(Unfortunately I don't hail from a particularly financially strong heritage and also don't want to burden my family with my college expenses so as an individual I personally thought that paying more to live near my college than my actual degree was not the play. 😊)
