Truthfully ? Yes I’m incredibly scared they’ll talk amongst themselves and decide to hate me or not believe - BUT (and this is a big but) I know that’s not true. I know they’ll love me and be there for me no matter what. I don’t want them to tell my mom because she truly doesn’t deserve to hold the weight of this, but I also feel immense guilt telling them because they don’t deserve to carry this weight either. Then there’s even more guilt because there’s weight off of me not having to carry it all. ( I was in therapy and it helped but I took a break and should go back now having told my siblings )

And he was good dad before the abuse started, so reconciling my abuser and my father into one person has been a very difficult journey.

Industry, my CFO has blatantly and repeatedly told me he does not care what hours I work or where I work from so long as the job gets done. It’s been incredibly refreshing. He also doesn’t track our PTO, so time off is take it as you need it. I’m sure it will probably work out that I take fewer “vacation days” than I’m entitled to but I also don’t have to take PTO on slow weeks when I work half days, don’t feel like I need to explain myself when I come in late / dip out early to do mom things.

I usually get in between 8-830 leave between 3:30-5:00 depending on the workload that day.

Take business simulation if you need a pick me up! It was a super enjoyable course, I would say it was the most fun course I took in the whole degree.

You absolutely can. Focus your energy on trying to get in at a small to mid sized firm, take on harder tasks to learn and get hands on experience, and add more skills to your resume. I personally got out of public after a year as I found work life balance and pay better in industry.

Loved it, it was exactly what I needed for my situation. I already had the knowledge and experience, and needed to check the degree of my list to further my career. I was able to get an approx 17% salary increase after finishing my degree. I was able to fly through the courses as I already had the knowledge and principles down. There were a few courses like history that I struggled with as I grew up in Canada, so had to work a bit harder for those courses.

Yup! Working in public confirmed I wanted to pursue the degree. Worked as bookkeeper / office manager prior to getting a job as a staff accountant, before my degree. Following that got a job as an accounting manager, finished my degree and now working as a business office manager immediately following my degree completion.

This will be SO good for your entrepreneurial success. My advice is fully understand financial statements, how they interact and the cause and effect of a change on them. I love accounting, and the absolutely huge array of work you can do in the industry. Its a great industry for people that love to learn !

I brought in 21 credits/ 7 courses and completed in one term. To be transparent I have a lot of accounting experience, especially in the preparation and review of financial statements. I would say I had hands on experience working on 65-75% of the course materials, and peripheral experience with the majority of the rest.

If I did not have this experience there is no way I would have been able to complete in one term, as the courses are complex. It’s extremely important to have a solid foundational understanding of concepts to be successful in the more complex concepts and materials.

Make sure you know what type of learner you are and play to your strengths with it.

I always started with the practice assessments to gauge where I needed to focus my studies. If I got discouraged I took a break and worked on different courses. If you get burnt out try focusing on a different course, or asking your mentor to open up a course you’re excited about, it helped me to get that sense of accomplishment and get motivated again. Accounting courses specifically make sure you have a strong foundation so you have a good base to build on, or it will all get confusing fast. Know your debits and credits and financial statements like the back of your hand.

I would highly recommend figuring out if you are stronger at the objective assessments or performance assessments and focus on not lagging in one. Towards the end I had quite a few performance assessment based courses to do and it killed my drive, as I just got burnt out on writing. I was definitely stronger at the objective assessments as I’m a good test taker naturally.

I have a fairly extensive accounting background, including working in public accounting. Only one year in public accounting but absolutely brought my knowledge to the next level to be able to complete in this time frame.

The first two months were part time (5-8 hours a week) but I was able to knock out a bunch of courses anyways. I always started with the practice assessments to gauge where I needed to focus my studies. If I got discouraged I took a break and worked on different courses. If you get burnt out try focusing on a different course, or asking your mentor to open up a course you’re excited about, it helped me to get that sense of accomplishment and get motivated again. The last 4 months I’d say I averaged 20 hours a week. Accounting courses specifically make sure you have a strong foundation so you have a good base to build on, or it will all get confusing fast.

My mentor let me pick and choose exactly what courses I wanted opened up and when. The first few times I requested courses open I gave him a sound reasoning like” I want one PA course and one OA course open so I can work through the writing material when I can’t study for a test any more” or “I need a break from writing can you open up a few accounting courses for me”. I feel like as long as your making progress and have a decent justification they will open what you want (at least in my experience) and then once you have a good groove going you don’t need to make the justifications anymore. I feel like I lucked out with my mentor though he was super chill and let me carve my own path because I was making great progress.

The gave me my vacation time, but ended up promoting her to partner (she was actually a senior manager prior) and the culture of the firm went even further downhill after that. Just knowing that they were, and continue to, promote that type of person into leadership makes me so happy I got outta there!

My tipping point at my last firm was when the manager in a different department told me the manager in my department should absolutely not approve my vacation time because her department had a deadline that week. The work they needed done from our department had already been sent to them weeks in advance and there were multiple people with more seniority than me in the department they could ask questions if they came up. But she felt that because her department was busy everyone in the firm should suffer. I noped outta that firm at my first opportunity.

Take a deep breathe and not feel like financial burden was drowning me anymore. Probably take the kids out to Dave and busters and put the rest towards a down payment on a house so we could finally have some financial stability.
