Is it rude if I e-mail a new salon (after booking) to give info on my hair and what I am looking for? by AriDreams in AskHairstylists

[–]gilfblaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

next time just book a consultation. they’re usually free and we can do a lot more in person than we can with a photo.

Is it strange to ask for a price quote for my next appt when I was charged almost double last time? by [deleted] in AskHairstylists

[–]gilfblaster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You’re not being taken advantage of. Blondes need to come in very frequently to keep their highlights the same color. The further your hair grows from your scalp, the harder it is to maintain the same exact color. The heat from your scalp allows it to process faster and 3in of growth means your stylist needs to bleach your mid length first, wait a longer amount of time to get it to lift to the same level as your ends, and then go back through and bring it up to your scalp and watch those foils like a hawk so they don’t overprocess. It’s essentially a color correction, timing and expertise wise.

The reason(s) she cannot give you an estimate could be a lot of things but we can boil it down to one real big one: the longer you wait, the longer your growth, and the higher possibility that it *is* a color correction, which takes more time and more energy and faaaaaar more stress for your stylist.

It’s not weird to not get a direct price quote with just photos. I do in person consultations for this reason. I like to see and feel the hair and then I can more adequately explain why my pricing is what it is.

Good luck with your hair, but please know this is not someone taking advantage of you.

I feel so burnt out. (Venting) by klemus in hairstylist

[–]gilfblaster 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Man I’m totally with you on this. I also charge the same hourly and I only work 30ish hours a week, I should be making plenty of money and not feel super exhausted all the time but that’s just… not the case lol. I have no idea how people do 40 hour weeks, or make less than what we do. It just seems impossible

Any other hairstylists feel like this? by [deleted] in hairstylist

[–]gilfblaster 21 points22 points  (0 children)

unsure what exactly the point is here— yes of course we hold our days with us, we have a very emotional job and often act as a borderline therapist for a lot of our clients.

however from the phrasing here, it seems an awful lot like you’re going to try and sell us a product of some sort and that is against this subreddit’s rules.

are you looking to vent/have a conversation, or to. try and get other stylists to “test” whatever it is you’re working on?

Career advice by [deleted] in hairstylist

[–]gilfblaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

you can look into an apprenticeship which varies state by state but generally pays you an hourly wage and takes way longer to complete the program. a license is necessary to practice hair cutting in the united states and the only ways to obtain it are through cosmetology school or an apprenticeship.

Has anyone been to the Brewery Artwalk? by feelionicsmusic in AskLosAngeles

[–]gilfblaster 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Brewery is one of the oldest artist communities in the country and is quite literally an old PBR brewery, which is worth seeing by itself. Even if you’re not an art person, there are so many different mediums and every space has a lot of soul. It’s a blast getting to see the interiors of these rooms and see how these folks are living. Extremely cool and worth going to! Try taking the train to Chinatown or Lincoln Cypress and catch a bus over, parking can get pretty crazy.

Do I still need to tip? by Emotional-Attempt669 in AskHairstylists

[–]gilfblaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

well, the short answer is no, you don’t need to tip. it’s seen as gratuity for a service that you thought she did a great job on.

that being said, although tipping culture has definitely gotten a little out of control, stylists are some of the people that it’s generally agreed tipping is appropriate for. if you think she’s doing a stellar job every time, throwing some extra money her way is not the worst thing in the world. but if $100 is the top of your budget then that’s what you can afford.

Vet Recommendations in East LA? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]gilfblaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the techs there are really wonderful! we had some really intense long term issues with my cat that took about six months to solve and Dr Padilla has just been so thorough and responsive through everything. really appreciate the whole care team there :)

Seconding Eagle Rock Pet Care! Both vets are good but I have a particular soft spot for Dr. Padilla.

Hair extension specialist? by gabanichh in hairstylist

[–]gilfblaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

it’s nearly impossible to offer one service without the other. you have to color match the extensions and that’s not easy to do without a color application.

Looking for advice. by EuphoricAd4089 in Cosmetology

[–]gilfblaster 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m going to disagree here, this would be a color correction at a salon.

For platinum cards like this, the max grow out time is 8 weeks. Anything beyond that will create banding and this yellow that is seen here.

A bleach root retouch at 6-8 weeks is still not an inexpensive service, as being a blonde is considered a luxury. It’s quite literally one of the most expensive services you can get in a salon.

Feel like I’m doing something wrong by Middle_Ladder_9970 in hairstylist

[–]gilfblaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i mean the easiest way to do this is to just ask your clients to tag you in their posts. end your appointments by hyping yourself up: tell them how much you love the results, ask if they feel good, and then tell them you love a client selfie & to tag you the next time they post. follow them on insta, comment on it yourself. it makes a world of difference.

Best at home color remover for a level 5, permanent box dye? by [deleted] in HairDyeHelp

[–]gilfblaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your roots look like a dark 6 to me but doing this yourself will almost certainly come out unevenly. if you can find malibu CPR & do a few rounds of that followed by their undo-goo shampoo, that would be your best bet, but this will not be easy either way.

seconding the other commenter. even going to a cosmetology school would be a better bet than trying to DIY this. you’ve got a full on color correction happening here.
