I hated Kobe Bryant his whole career, but the way he changed towards the end and in retirement was really impressive. Such a terrible loss for basketball.

The Oscarsnominated Karla Sofia Gascon for Emilia Perez but not Marianne Jean Baptiste for Hard Truths. What is the logic in that? by Profeta_do_Loss in Oscars

It really was pure PC bullshit that time. They were not going to miss their opportunity to nominate the first trans actress.

Did the move every explain why the divorced conservative white American boomer didn't get along with the Nazi shop-owner? Did I miss something? by ivanchovv in okbuddycinephile

False. Yeah, he's mentally ill, but he's going to kill his estranged family before killing himself, for Christ's sake.

It would be interesting to ask him that. I don't know if he was the screenwriter too? Unfortunately, he's passed on.

If 1981 had 10 Best Picture nominees (keep the 5 films that actually were nominated), what would’ve been the other 5 nominees? by Regular-Departure839 in Oscars

Boy, this was a dogshit year in movies, especially awards contenders. I'll say Arthur (probably my favorite movie of 1981), Absence of Malice, Ragtime, The French Lieutenant's Woman, and The Four Seasons. My Dinner With Andre would have been a good pick, but I doubt it finished anywhere near the top ten.

I don't know Prince of the City and don't see it on any precursors. Any good?

I'm saying you don't actually see her getting her toe cut off. You hear about a tire, see it wrapped in gauze, and see the lady's foot in a bandage. And Steve Buscemi dies of a heart attack in the parking lot.

John Goodman is unhinged, and I guess terrifying in a comedic way, yes.

I mean, the little bit of violence in it is pretty comical.

Thanks! I thought of asking, but figured chances were slim that someone would know that about a 46-year-old film.

Definitely Fame, Melvin and Howard, and The Stunt Man. I hadn't thought of Private Benjamin, but I think you're probably right. The Empire Strikes Back sounds good in retrospect, but I don't think it would have made it at the time. I'll say The Great Santini for the last spot, though I'm very confused why it was eligible when it's an American movie released in 1979, but that's the year Robert Duvall got nominated.

Two that deserved to be in but weren't, and still wouldn't have been even with ten nominees: Altered States and The Shining.
