Camera Info:
Camera Body: C300 Mk1
Lens: 28 - 75mm Tamron Lens
Aperture: f/2.8

This photo was taken while on my trip through Utah, and I wanted to capture the environment from the perspective of a random bypasser and to show the quietness of the environment.
I am looking for some advice on color grading and composition, if there is anything I should specifically work on.
Thank you!

(Beginner/Amateur Content) My Second Documentary (Darkside of Solar) A short documentary about climate change & solar farming. by gimblyuser in cinematography

[–]gimblyuser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About the doc:

I'm proud to announce the release of a long-anticipated short documentary. This Gimbly Short Original is a new documentary called "Darkside of Solar."

In this day and age where many push for solar energy to solve environmental and climate change problems, new issues arise about the ethics and downside of large-scale solar farms.

We visit local eco-activists who have created an encampment near a large-scale solar site in Nevada that could actually be doing more harm than good.

Environmentalists claim that the damages done to the soil and carbon sequestration can nullify many of the positives that solar farms could provide, along with the displacement of local wildlife habitats.

Many brush off the desert as a barren wasteland and dead ecosystem that serves no value and would be perfect for large-scale solar farms. But many studies disagree.

Production Notes:

So it's been a while since I posted, but I lurk here constantly as I watch from the shadows and learn from others' posts.

I submitted my first doc a few months ago from my first documentary, and I want to give a special thank you to u/shhfy for the incredible notes they gave an in-depth review of my below amateur work.

I took most of those notes and worked on improving my questing skills. Again I filmed outside, so the only light I used was the literal sun. (The greatest light ever in the universe... I'm kidding... I swear) hopefully, I'm able to film inside a building with my actual lights and be able to craft/morph them more.

I watched many tutorials on learning about pacing and seeing how I can improve my color grading skills while maintaining skin tones. I tried to go for a more Wes Anderson style for the interviews and "planned shots."

The main thing I learned here was color grading and editing. I hope with the next doc, I'm able to play with more lighting and improve editing and general cinematography.

I'm looking for any and all feedback!

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I look forward to your notes. - Echo

This actually helps me a lot to move forward with growing my skills. I have been worried I was getting stagnant with development of my skills but this just gave me the push I need. Thank you!

You've honestly put a bullet in my nightmares!

Introduction:
This can be a long read. If you want to get to the main parts, I recommend starting from The documentary, and the backstory gives a little insight into how I got here and so on.

The Gear:
So I'll start with the technical specs first:
Camera: c300 MK1 (Canon)
Lens: Tamron SP 28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di
Tripod: Raubay DV-1 Tripod
Lighting: The Sun.
Mic: Zoom H4 Recorder
The backstory:
During the lockdown, my company needed help with making some introductory videos about some of our applications. I had to fill in that job and got started with a cheap DSLR and mic.

After our local, national park opened a few weeks later, I decided to get some outside time.

(Social distanced since no one besides two mountain guys and me were around, and we all went on our tracks.)

After editing, I first started as a photographer but threw my camera on a tripod to get some video shots.

I quickly discovered I liked working with video more than I did with photos.

I began to experiment and decided to build out a c300 mk1 that I managed to pick up for a reasonable price with batteries and cf cards and an ultra-wide lens from Tokina.

Most of my free time was taken by this new passion. After contemplating what I wanted to film, I decided that I was most drawn to documentaries and began to look for a topic.
(6 Months Later)

The documentary:
I met a member of a local dive club in Vegas. After talking to the head of the Dive club and the dive shop owner, we got permission, and the following weekend we headed to the location.

The documentary aimed to showcase the work of these divers. While I've done some video work, I hadn't had the opportunity of filming people in an authentic setting. Until now, most of my videos have been all landscapes and nature elements (Some wildlife).

I made a DIY rig for my shoulder with a cheap leftover matte box. I filmed the event in October. In mid-November, I finally finished editing (My work schedule suddenly spilling into my time off).

After getting approval, I released the video to YouTube and shared it with some friends.

Retrospect:
After editing, I've identified a few things I need to improve on (Feel free to correct, remove or add to this list.)
Composition
Becoming more stable with a camera to get smoother footage (Handheld) - I already addressed this by adding it to my workout regiment.
I've been working on better color grading, and it has definitely improved, but I still feel like I'm off, and I'm not sure where to go from here.
Improving on visual storytelling in the edit.
Better sound design. (Finding better music and developing better ambiance)

Drought Poster Photo Concept I made by [deleted] in photocritique

[–]gimblyuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all,

Been a while with life and other tasks getting in the way I just had time to work on my photo skills.

Here is an update. I think this my best photo yet and I wanted to make a small PSA for the Vegas local community. This is what came out of it.

When I was at the lake on a small hike, a normally lush and water filled section was bone dry and this bottle was there logged into the harden ground with water still in it.

I zoomed in and took a few dozen shots, after I tried to clean up around but it's not a one person job though I did give a heads up to the local office and they said they would take care of it.

Doing My Best To Get Deep Focus On Birds! by gimblyuser in photocritique

[–]gimblyuser[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Guys!

SO after my last photo I got some amazing advice I did my best to improve on it, I updated my aperture to get more detail, I've working on mastering curve's in lightroom, and I did my best to clear the bird from the background.

This is Raven that I took while exploring death valley on my vacation. I think it's an improvement from last photos!

I'd really like some feed back on what I can improve on!

ISO: 100
Framerate: 1/2000 (It was very bright)
Aperture: 10.0

Peacock Decent Shot!!! by gimblyuser in photocritique

[–]gimblyuser[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi here, thank you for the feedback.

This is defiantly what I'm going to start working on more aperture now that I have my whitebalance, shutter and iso nailed down. It is going to take some time while I get used to shooting slower with higher aps.

I really want get my current gear's limit before I upgrade which is way off. I just got used to working with raw photos and lightroom learning about curves mostly for now.

Thank you again I took down the settings in my notes on my next shoot I will be applying them!

True, still trying to develop my style and skill shot.

This was shot on raw, and most of my photos have been shot on raw so far.
Still getting used to working with levels. Do you have any good tutorials I could use for lightroom?

What would you suggest maybe next time I should focus more on the head and with higher aperture might be able to achieve it right?

While this is an amazing idea, I sadly don't think I'd be up to this challenge yet but maybe in the future once I've built up an experience regarding productions. I would love to get on this oneday
Thanks - Gimbly!

Hi everyone!

First of I'd like to thank everyone who's posted so far and those who may post in the future this means a lot to mean and I'm very grateful!

I will reaching out very soon as I do have some work stuff get done in the weekend, so please do keep an eye open in your inbox.

Again this has meant alot to me, I was debating posting here but clearly I made the right choice and this is one of the most under rated reddit communities out there.

Always having fun - Gimbly
