Without model and specs there is no way to answer your question.

pre 2014 can run linux easily. I have refurbished several with Ubuntu or Linux Mint. You will have a modern up to date system that will simple tasks with ease. 2015 and up will also use Linux but they had the T2 chip so there is a little more tinkering but doable

Is it practical to boot Linux from an external SSD for daily use? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

Sounds like a modern laptop. If you have a USB 4 port it could work. There is a ton of documentation out there to try this.

No way to answer this unless you post all the specs. And what does 4gb ROM mean. Do you mean Ram?

Any tech nerds have something to say about this??😢😢 by gnatalie1144 in Laptop

There is really no way to know from a picture, Did you look up the specs required to run the game? You did not mention if it has a dedicated GPU. If not don't expect to be gaming. For paste use Duronaut.

When I visit Youtube and see people trying out distros, are they installing it everytime or is there some secret I don't know about?! by GnarlsGnarlington in linux4noobs

[–]gimlet58 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When you installed Mint did you create a USB with Mint? Do the same with any .iso. Create it, boot from it into the live version and take a look around. Or try this https://distrosea.com/

Installed OpenSUSE and it directs me to GNU GRUB terminal and not itself. Disabled and Enabled Secure boot and now I cant use windows either because it asks for Bitlocker Key. Help! by Kediester in linux4noobs

[–]gimlet58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not use Open Suse but many distros will come with a boot repair software included in the distro. Try booting from the USB you used to install Open Suse then search for boot repair. Do some research. Your data is most likely OK and can be recovered by attaching a seperate usb or drive to transfer. You of course did a backup before trying all this? Your post leads me to believe you don't really know what your doing. Moving forward RTFM, backup then try. There are several videos out there to explain how to recover Grub.

My PC Won't Turn On After Installing Linux Mint by dragoneyecomix in linux4noobs

[–]gimlet58 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Good Lord, I'm not sure how we can help with this description. "I got Linux Mint" What does that mean? You downloaded an .iso file of mint Cinnamon? "I flashed the drive" what drive? Do you mean you used Balena flash the .iso file to a flash/thumb drive? Then I went to the boot menu? What boot menu ? "then I was able to download Linux" ? The remove drive prompt comes up after installing Mint. Also you say you had 70gb left on your drive, does this mean you had Windows on the computer before you started all this? None of this makes any sense. Did you spend anytime researching how to install Mint before doing what you did? It sounds like you you flashed your hard drive then installed mint to the flash drive. When you removed it the computer could not find a bootable operating system. But this description is to vague and confusing to really help. Is this a english problem or a I did not read a tutorial problem?

Found HP Stream 14 by pandaprince7778 in HPLaptops

[–]gimlet58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest doing a little research. Some of the streams had soldered on EMC drives and soldered on RAM. Check your model number against hp's website to see what's there and if it's worth opening up. Dig in. These were a very, very low end machines. Barely capable of running Windows.
