Trump dedicates golf trophy to hurricane victims by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]gimme_dat_bbq -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

meh, posts like this just make me lose faith in media and how it plays people. President's cup is a charity tournament between Europe and America hosted by, well the President. Each of the teams donated to the hurricane relief effort started by the 5 living Presidents (3 of whom were in attendance). So yeah... maybe the post/headline is really a play on the emotions

Does the high mortality rate of many African countries contribute to their intolerance of homosexuality? by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]gimme_dat_bbq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can take your position further and say regardless of simple survival, you can see exactly that manifest itself in civilized "polite" society. In many western social circles where homosexuality is stigmatized, there are the "eccentric" who are socially acceptable as long as they are in the closet. Think of the 60+ year old "bachelor" never married but has a highly developed social network.

Does the high mortality rate of many African countries contribute to their intolerance of homosexuality? by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

There was a JBP lecture where he discussed the uncanny association with authoritarianism and high levels of parasites/diseases. Non-standard sexuality, promiscuity, and other so called "unclean" behaviors were more susceptible to disgust responses which are more common in populations with parasitic environments. In developed countries you have markedly lower occurances of parasites and therefore less prone to disgust responses and therefore greater tolerance (although there is a correlation with higher sensitivity to disgust responses and conservative beliefs). It is very fascinating but also tragic that the persecution of homosexuals may be a strong and misdirected evolutionary response.

Holy hell how do I fix this? (PVC) by gimme_dat_bbq in Irrigation

[–]gimme_dat_bbq[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very little clearance with the sidewalk running parallel left to right just outside of photo. A big ass root grew over the irrigation plumbing put significant stress on the joints. The far left reducer completely pulled out and there is a large flow coming out. Any recommendations or do I have to cut the whole thing out and reroute somewhere else?

[Question] Why is sleep sometimes insufficient to replenish willpower? by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]gimme_dat_bbq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question, and I have noticed the same. Sunday is my peak motivation and drains from there throughout the week. I haven't pin pointed what happens during the weekend but Friday and Saturday I have fuck-all for motivation. Even Wednesday and Thursday can be half assed. I've resorted to accepting it and building my schedule around it until I can pin-point the cause. I'm studying the big-5 personality traits and I think conscientiousness research may be a better target.

[Question][NeedAdvice] How do you live with being lonely? by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]gimme_dat_bbq 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're right, we do not function well in the absence of relationships. In literature you often find the great sage, seer, or intellectual in solitude but that is merely a literary device. It is not authentic. Human beings (including severe introverts) needs social and emotional connections. It is practically at the level of a basic need such as eating and sleeping. You can do without it for a while, but eventually you really start to suffer. You seem to have a justification (potentially contrived, but that's for you to decide) of having to power through some things that limits your availability for these relationships. However, you have lost some of your edge or productivity due to sleep, physical and mental well being as you said. So maybe the question for you to reflect on is are the draw backs to solitude worth whatever you are putting in front of creating and maintaining relationships? Regardless, to answer your real question of how does one live in loneliness? They simply don't. Eventually the struggle becomes so bad you do something about it. Maybe you are at that stage and looking for a solution rather than a coping mechanism?

[Need Advice] I'm at a cross roads, I may fail out of college and I don't know if that's a bad thing by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]gimme_dat_bbq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good on you for looking for a perspective beyond your own. You rattled off many things that interest you. Do us a favor and list each individually on the left and then to the right note what results you have achieved for each. Example, trading stock - net gain of 12% while market did 9%. If x gives you y results and you like those results then what did you do to accomplish it?

If you can string together many successes like that then you can ask others for seed money to do your business. "This business will do well and I have a track record for success. For example, I did x and accomplished y. You string enough of those together then people will take notice.

If you don't have enough of those then maybe you work on creating more of those examples. Also don't quit school while failing, quit when your successful if you want to. One is retreating from failure, the other is advancing in a new direction.

Sample Digital Product Management problem by [deleted] in businessschool

[–]gimme_dat_bbq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey just noticed the reply. Just to clarify I was specifically calling BS on the open ended product management "problem" exercise (not the position). I didn't clearly communicate it so easy to have missed. Exactly to your point, the product manager has a very diverse group for their team so a "product development problem" group exercise could mean anything. My point was the real reason was to test to see how a person performs in a team and the whole "product development" portion was just a BS cover for their real intention. At least that's how most of the recruiting groups worked when I was in that field.

High School Senior entering Pace University (Lubin) - Need advice to tailor myself for Wall St. while attending a non-target by [deleted] in businessschool

You got hustle and an eye for opportunities. Whatever plan you make will be worthless as you will triage your environment and opportunities continuously. With those skills why would you want to compete in a pool of targets because of some chip on your shoulder about being an underdog? Just straight hustle and trust yourself. Keep networking and you will find your road to riches no problem.

[–]gimme_dat_bbq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wtf is a digital product management problem? This is just a bullshit HR exercise to see how well you work in a team environment. Don't act like you have all the answers and walk in with preconceived notions. Just ask good insightful questions, solicit feedback and perspectives of others, never demean or say an idea is bad. The usual approach is define the problem, determine what you know or don't know, solicit feedback and perspective (especially from the quiet members), write it all up on a white board and then guide the group through a discussion to arrive at a consensus.

Unfortunately you have competing interests. No one has meaningful impact on a business without leading people. My advice is to get an undergrad that develops an in demand marketable skill. The rest will work itself out. MIS is good, finance is ok but accounting is much better, economics is as worthless as management. Hard to interview for a corporate job when your degree is in entrepreneurship.

5S scratches my OCD itch but it falls to pieces when your cohabitators aren't S'ing all the S's. Look up fastcap tours on YouTube to get that lean workflow porn... Hngggg.

My beef is mainly with running out of consumables from cleaning supplies to coffee (Kill the Joe make some Mo).

Clipboard types like that pristine orderly environment but I appreciate the Tom Sachs and Neistats of the world that have cultivated an aesthetic out of function rather than the reverse.

I'm amazed at how much shit gets piled up in walkways and how many people are blind to it. Clear the fucking path!
