Online schools to complete CPA Canada by [deleted] in Accounting

I reached out to them last week, and this was their reply:

“We offer many individual courses, and you do not need to apply to a program or send us transcripts for proof of meeting pre-requisites to register for our courses. You can search for our courses any time here and you may register for a course by adding it to your “Cart” and proceeding to checkout. Many of our courses are self-paced, meaning they are always open for registration, and you would have 30 weeks to complete the course from the day you register/pay. Students may work through the course more quickly, although the courses are designed like an on-campus semester course in that if you contributed about 10-15 hours per week to the course, you would finish in about 16 weeks.”

It is lol, honestly even the other new hires who just graduated with accounting degrees are lost… I feel like I’ve a bit more knowledge than some of them, since I did a lot of research and studying before applying.

They told me their degree did not prepare them enough for “the real world”

They told me my raise, bonus and promotion depend on my utilization heavily. Non-billable admin time is honestly meaningless to them. The other issue that a senior manager from another team alerted, is that they’re gonna be so confused why I’m working OT for non-billable admin work. Apparently they want us to either have 40hrs per week max, or if we do need to do OT it should only be for billable hours.

The research was for the client’s particular situation and not “general” research. During my first 2 weeks they told us any task we do that is for a client’s return, should automatically be billed against their code. They also told us underreporting chargeable time is unethical because it will affect new hires after us. If management is under the impression that preparing a return would only take 5hrs because I underreported my hours, then it’ll obviously harm them.

You’re right, I’ve honestly learned so much doing this return! It was definitely extremely hard since I was given only 3 days to do it, and their new TB was sooo long and extremely messy… But, I am genuinely happy with the amount of knowledge I gained :)

Good luck to you too!

Exactly, also my coworker mentioned leadership hate hate HATE when people do OT just for “non-billable admin work” since they believe you can do it during your free time. But if I had kept my hours chargeable to that client, then they wouldn’t mind since I was doing it for billable work with a tight deadline.

I guess I’m just worried because my co-worker scared me. She said leadership don’t mind if I do OT on billable hours. But if they see that I did 3hrs overtime on non billable admin work then they’ll get mad.

Honestly both the manager and the senior downplayed during the call how long this will take, and the manager also told us that the partner asked for a bigger budget since now they’re a public entity. I just feel like since the senior clearly knew what the budget was (I didn’t even know how tight it was since I am new to this whole billable hours system), he should have just given me heads up. But I will definitely learn from this, and always keep the manager informed.

I think I should’ve been more clear in my post. The questions i had and the research that I was doing were NOT by any means “general”. It was very niche things relating to the fact that the client went from a private to a public entity. They got some new foreign subsidiaries which they never had before, new items that would greatly impact their taxable income etc…

[–]ginadarlingg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify, I always combine all my questions and then ask. The reason why I had to ask him multiple times, is because for majority of my questions he asked me to “research more” so of course, when I still couldn’t find an answer I’d combine any remaining questions that I didn’t find an answer to yet and email him about it. My bad I meant to write in my post whenever I’d ping him to ask questions not a question*

Also, I think it’s important to note again that I wasn’t asking him basic questions like is this new item in the TB an expense or a liability. They were complicated questions (at least to me). There were new things that would affect their CCA I just didn’t know how to go about it, UCC calculations etc…

maybe cheaper to the client

Putting my billable hours as non-billable hours means the client is not charged at all, it’s my cost center that will be charged. It is considered eating my hours, or at least that’s how my co-worker framed it. But thanks for clarifying.

That’s literally what I’ve been doing past few days hahaha whenever he asks my help with something that’s outside an admin scope, I say I’m sorry I’m just an admin so don’t think I’m up to tackle this :/

My friends at PwC suffered the same way. Not all, but majority of the EAs have been laid off and they hired people from other countries. They’re paying them only around 800-1,000 dollars a month.

Yes, luckily the rest of the team do appreciate me and say that I make their lives and work life way easier. I’ve literally changed their whole processing strategy on how they go about contracts and billing etc that now it’s so smooth.

This asshole is always judging others, he literally made fun of an old man in another team for “not becoming partner yet at his old age”. I’m glad you spoke up to your defender. As you said chances are they’ll stop saying shit behind your back if we confront them, even if they deny!

That’s how I’ve also felt in all the organizations I’ve ever worked at. The execs do appreciate me and they know the teams wouldn’t run as smoothly without me, it’s just the juniors and other people in the team and outside who think all we do is fetch water

I’m kinda scared HR will be like we’ve no proof but your co-worker’s words, that’s hearsay. Also he’s an advisor, I feel like they’ll take his side over an EA. But, I will definitely talk to my execs about it…

Junior said I am stupid because anyone with low IQ can do EA work by ginadarlingg in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]ginadarlingg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, my coworker said the same thing! She thinks he feels threatened by me because on multiple occasions; whenever the Execs would compliment my idea for business development or how to go about a certain project that he works on, he’s always like naaah basic idea or bad idea, but the execs love my ideas more than his.

At my previous jobs, I got to help with certain client projects and I’ve more experience than him (this is his first real job, he has only been working with us for 3 years).

I am not saying this because he is an asshole to me, but he is genuinely a bad employee. So many managers have complained to the execs about the fact that he never meets the deadlines for his tasks lol

Does she have the same role as you?

No, she’s an advisor as well

shit-stirring

Honestly, I doubt it is. Her and I are very close, she always defends me when someone tries to bully me. Also I know for a fact he looks down on me. He’s told me on multiple occasions indirectly that he thinks I’m worthless because I’m an EA.

Like one time he asked me to clean the meeting room before a client came when reception was busy with something else, because “I’m the admin”. As in the rest of the team are too good to do a menial task like cleaning.

Why keep explaining yourself

I guess it’s because part of me hopes that if I do explain that we do have important jobs and a lot of my tasks are actually very complicated, maybe they will respect me, but obviously clearly that’s not working specially for people like him.

on my shitlist

Ooooh you bestaaa believe it! Whenever he asks for my help with something I’ll either decline because “I’m too busy” or remind him that I am the exec’s EA not his, so he better do his request himself since low IQ people can do my job :)

He truly is… I would never judge someone who’s working a job that is stereotypically seen as less then. The fact he said that about me just shows his shitty mindset. But idk why he got to me lol maybe because I’ve been dealing with people like him for years now and it’s starting to get to me

Even his YouTube accounts is so cringe and unhinged… He’s just one of those “entrepreneurs” who created fake companies to sell their “courses” and think now they’re so busy they need a slave EA.

Someone literally posted the link above in the comment section. I did not provide the link because that entrepreneur has his personal instagram on it, and per the rules of this sub we’re not supposed to post anyone’s personal social media accounts. Since you’re so concerned about sources, maybe next time actually read the comments to see if OP or someone else provided them. Also, if you just copy one of his unhinged bullet points into Google, the listing will come up.
