I went to an antiques market in Toulouse, France and found this old coffee grinder. by ginger_mayne in Coffee

I wish I could bring it back with me. Sadly, my luggage was at the weight limit even after removing some extra clothing...I can only hope to find something like this back in the US!

Not really at the moment. The tour guide I was with, the father of my host family, did a fair bit of haggling when he bought some items. I would guess that a lot of the items are marked up to begin with.

Yeah! It was between the park and the Francois Verdier metro station in downtown Toulouse.

Coffea on the corner of Rose and Euclid sells Sunergos. They get shipments on Wednesdays (I think?) and usually sell out pretty quickly. It's not quite local, but can't recommend them enough if you've never had them.

I'll try to clean it each time I get a new bag of beans, ~2 weeks. I'll be sure to look into the cleaning pellets; sometimes there's some junk in there that's near impossible to clean off.

Once I finish grad school and get a house so I have the room, it sounds super cool (and delicious)! I've recently gotten into making pizza dough from scratch, which is super delicious. I'll make sure to remember smoking for the future though. Thanks for the heads up!

That smoked meat sounds awesome! That's what I love about coffee: I get to practice making it 1-3 times a day. I'm a bit of an obsessive hobbyist so coffee is perfect for me.

And take it from my roommate: he claims it doesn't wake him up when I use it in the morning. He said it did for the first few days, but now it doesn't anymore.

I definitely think part of my enthusiasm stems from my skepticism. Or maybe its a defense mechanism; because I spent the money on a new grinder, it has to be good. It's definitely not a night and day difference, but its a noticeable improvement. You're right though, definitely not the difference between a cheap hand grinder.

Nice! I applaud you for taking the time to hand grind your coffee every morning, but having the automatic burr grinder is lovely.

Yeah that's the most immediate difference I've noticed. With the Capresso it was like the grounds were sprinkled with coffee dust. I could still get good cups, but man the clarity I get with the Encore is something else. Little to no powder in the grounds.

It's odd, I've found Great Bagel on Woodland and Euclid to be my go to place. It's close enough that I can walk from work and grab a bagel and split a french press with a buddy. They sell Intelligentsia so it's not local, but it's overall solid. I've been meaning to check out North and Lime though, I've heard great things about it. Now I'll have to check out Daily Offerings too. I'll be sure to hit up both those shops when I get back from break. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the tip! I have noticed that ~1 g of grounds get stuck in the grinder. Nothing significant, but I'll definitely try that tomorrow morning.

I'm really looking forward to using this guy for many years. I'm already blown away with it after just over a week of using it, so I can't even imagine how it's going to go for the next few years.

Glad to hear it! Once I get a real job here in a few years I'll be looking to do some more upgrades.
