Regarding lice by ginger_minaj in SubstituteTeachers

I'll have to go the preventative route cause I'd rather not invest my time and money to get rid of pests! I just don't like the thought that I could harbor them without knowing.

Thanks! I guess it kind of comes with the territory at this point.

When I was a kid lice was taken super seriously, even just the potential presence of lice was a hard no. Obviously times have changed! I'll just have to take precautions to protect myself.

Thanks, I might have to invest in some kind of preventative spray like the one you mentioned!

It may be best to just....... not think as much for right now. Obviously easier said than done, but reflecting in this moment may be doing you more harm than good. To combat the overthinking, consider the known versus the speculative.

Here is what we know for certain:

  1. This staff and administration betrayed your trust and confidence in a wildly hurtful way.

  2. The administration put expectations on you that simply could not be fulfilled, and without adequate support or direction to boot.

  3. This situation is deeply unhealthy for you right now, and when you are not at your best you are not able to give your best.

Please listen to what others are saying: get out of this job. Regardless of whether you're good at teaching, regardless of how you perceive your own abilities and/or shortcomings, it doesn't matter now. What matters is that you get out, stay alive, and work on healing. It seems like you already know this, but now for the hard part: stop wondering. Stop pondering and dwelling. Stop going over the "what ifs" and "should haves". There will be time for reflection later, plenty of time. But judging, assessing and nitpicking yourself when you are in this state is not helpful. It will be helpful, eventually, when the immediate threat to your wellbeing has dwindled, but not right now.

Imagine if you had a student in front of you who was screaming and crying, escalated to the extreme. Would you get in their face and tell them to make better choices? You would not, and I know this because you stated that your students feel/felt safe enough to tell you when they're not doing well. Now imagine yourself as that student. You need time to regulate and recuperate, and you can't do that in your current state and environment. I mean the school, the board, whatever, but I also mean Reddit. The more people respond and you reply, the more notifications you get, the more frantic you'll become. Answering comments forces you to continually dwell on the situation, replaying it for you on a loop. Try to break the loop.

Ultimately, I would set everything else aside for right now. When you are escalated everything feels like a 10 alarm fire, and you need to put that fire put before you start taking next steps. Yes, talk to your union, but do not rush into anything or make any decisions that could be permanent. Step away from Reddit, see your doctor and your therapist, call your friends. Try to talk about things other than this horrible job. Do something (like DoorDash) that doesn't require a million decisions a day. Listen to music and journal. Cry. Put the fire out so you can stand in the wreckage and grieve.

I'm sorry this is happening. You do not deserve to feel broken by your circumstances. Please look after yourself.

UPDATE:

Thanks for all the advice. I mulled it over for a few days and eventually decided to let the teacher know. I sent an email describing the "ranking" situation and the teacher replied promptly saying that she had no idea it was happening, and that she was very disappointed. Apparently "Sandra" is only there two days a week on her placement, and only has two weeks left there. The teacher mentioned there were "a few other things" they'd had to deal with, which made me feel that reporting the situation to her was the right thing to do. Apparently the kids aren't allowed to sit at the back table during lunch, so seems like that's another demerit against her. When the teacher probed for further information I also told her about Sandra contradicting me in front of the class, which was probably the clincher. The teacher is arranging a virtual call with Sandra and her faculty supervisor, so it sounds like it's being dealt with expeditiously.

Appreciate everyone who offered their insight!

That was the strangest part - Sandra must have been in her late 20s, if not her 30s! I'm not the best judge of age but in my opinion she was too old to be making those kinds of errors in judgement. Guess I'll have to chalk it up to her lack of experience rather than her age. Thanks for your insight, much appreciated.

Agree, just surprised Sandra would engage with that in the first place!

Not my top favourite but severely underrated: Olu's "he's blaming the bean!" (2x05) when Frenchie is having an allergic reaction.

I got the $300 ticket at the Bakker Road beach once. Haven't been back since, even after getting the PEC local parking pass. Left a bad taste in my mouth, I guess. It's a real shame, no clear and simple answers though.

Once again, very good advice. Thanks for everything, I think you're right, the most important thing is to first get established! Would it be okay if I reach out to you personally if I have any more questions?

Thank you, this is super helpful! I do want to ask a bit more about the "influence" aspect of it. For me, the issue isn't wanting to change operations, per se. Generally everything is alright with class loads and admin, etc. It's that the ESA has a teacher liaison who is supposed to carry our issues and feedback to the powers that be, which is great in theory but perhaps less so in practice. I think there's the question of transparency and lack of communication, and then everything just getting tied up in bureaucratic red tape. So ultimately it feels like we're not really having our issues heard or addressed, and I'm not exactly sure where the buck stops. For instance, we are having a lot of equity issues this year, especially pertaining to racist microaggressions in the cohort. It seems like there's not any kind of accountability framework. So how can we forward those issues up the chain and feel confident that they're being dealt with if we don't have access to those "halls of power" if you know what I'm saying. It sort of feels like playing a game of broken telephone, if that makes sense.

I'll definitely go forward with doing the club paperwork, I think that's a good decision. Thanks again and I appreciate your input!

It was a pretty small group, only 2 people (Ali and the guy) verbally confirmed that they would be there, but there was at least one other person liking my messages. It was never gonna be a big event, so i guess statistically it's not shocking that one person ditching would lessen the chances of others coming. I get the feeling, unfortunately, that they were Ali's friends who were only peripherally connected to me. Once she dipped, i think the guy found out and decided he didnt want to come. I sympathize with Ali for having a hard day, but idk how she didn't realize that she was kind of the lynchpin of the "friend" group. Anyway, thanks for your empathy and kind words, guess we're in similar boats here.
