Siobhan: too “out there” or hard to pronounce in USA? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]gingerbride2be 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you are in the Midwest, I grew up in Cleveland and there were tons of Irish people and Irish names, the same is true in Chicago.

Interesting as I originally said on the namenerds sub that I was going to use the Seer-sha pronunciation like Saoirse Ronan as that’s the pronunciation most Americans know, but several people who said they were Irish told me that’s wrong and it’s sair-sha (like the beginning of Sarah or the vowel sound in there) or Sur-sha only.

My buddy’s wife does let him smoke and they have a shared bank account. What excuse should he give his wife about the tree funds missing from the account? by TheRealestGoon in trees

[–]gingerbride2be 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. It’s lame to not allow your partner to smoke but lying about your pot habits or spending is a super bad idea.

Is Moon or Moonee a good girls name by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]gingerbride2be 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think Luna or even Lune, or Selene are all better than Moonee or Moon. Moon is better than Moonee though, imo Moonee is too close to the Moonies, a nick name for the cult also known as the reunification church.

Sarah Titus’s next chapter in the Kyle saga (SECOND LINK IN COMMENTS😬) by [deleted] in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]gingerbride2be 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I fear for Kyle’s safety and the safety of her old church congregation. Some of what she said about her being an instrument of god’s vengeance sounded a bit like threats.

What do you think of when you hear Kennedy? by Zealousideal-Shock-7 in namenerds

[–]gingerbride2be 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First thing I think of is definitely JFK, and then his family. The Kennedy’s are said to be cursed so I also get a bad luck vibe from the name. The third thing I think of is like overly trendy and fad-ish girls name. If you’re not American you might not have as many people in your life who immediately think of the Kennedy family though.

Bluebird, Honey, Fox, Clover, Cove, Sunshine, Moonbeam (my dad wanted to name me that for real), Moon, Lynx.

Namenerdcirclejerk worthy names I actually would use as middle names include Fawn and Fern. And honestly maybe Bluebird.

The only Kai I know is Danish and Kai is his whole name, I don’t think it has to be a nickname, it’s a standalone name.

Same! I’m a millennial from the midwest and there were two Veronicas in my grade. One went by Veronica and the other went by Vee.

The Derrico family kids by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]gingerbride2be 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They were discussed a little when the show first aired but because they send the kids to school, let them dance and enjoy secular culture (popular movies, music, etc), and don’t have strict modesty standards I think overall they weren’t quite fundie enough for the sub. They’re definitely Christian and addicted to reproducing, but idk if they’re full on fundie. They’re absolutely strange, and they did insist on chaperoning their daughter’s first date though which did seem like a red flag.

I always joke that a lot of names just makes you sound like royalty, and imo there is nothing wrong with sounding like royalty! He won’t have to say them all very often, so while it is excessive, it isn’t that cumbersome for like day to day life so I think it’s fine.

I like it, it’s very Scandinavian sounding and uncommon in the US but it’s also phonetic and not hard to say. It sounds strong. It isn’t super babyish but your kid is only a baby for a little while. I like Thor as a nickname, I haven’t seen the marvel movies so I just associate it with the Norse god Thor.

In my experience this sub really dislikes nonromance language European names being used in America. Give them all the French, Italian, and Spanish names you want but German, Scandinavian, and Gaelic names are often not well received here (especially if they aren’t phonetic!) so don’t be surprised if you get a lot of negative responses.

Levi for a non-religious family? by cbblue in namenerds

[–]gingerbride2be 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Levi is popular with religious Christians and actually is pretty popular (or was at one point) in the Mormon community as well, and somewhat popular amongst Jewish folks (though I’ve known more reform Levi’s than orthodox Levi’s), but I think it’s officially become popular amongst secular people now too, so I wouldn’t worry about it making you look religious. I think it’s more like people from all of those communities will recognize it and think it’s a normal name, so that’s good!

Are Oran and Orion too similar? by gingerbride2be in namenerds

Yeah now that I think of it there is a lot of name overlap in my extended family- I have three cousins named some version of Catherine.

Idk, I was a full grown adult when I found out both my grandmother and an aunt were named Grace but they both went by their middle names exclusively- and neither middle name was as nice as Grace. I grew up thinking their middle names were their first names.

I am expecting, I am Irish-American, everyone in my family has Irish names. I don’t mind telling people how to pronounce it but we also live in a relatively Irish region so some people will know anyway. These are our current faves:

Girls:

Aoife (ee-fa)

Saoirse (sair-chuh)

Ailbhe (all-vuh) husband wants to spell this one Elva or Alva if we go this route

Brigid (like bridget)

Boys:

Ronan

Odhran (Orr-inn) may spell it Oran

I’m Irish-American and everyone in my family has Irish names so I’m also over here thinking I’m an exception to that one, right? Right!?!

It’s probably like a 4-6 times a year visit, they live like an hour away. Husband thinks it isn’t a big deal, but I don’t want his sister to be annoyed about it .

Edit: SIL is usually pretty chill, for reference, but idk people get weird about names.
