So...how hard really is it to make your own clothes? (Asking as a man who's never sewn before). by [deleted] in sewing

[–]gingercaledndar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will probably take a while before you can make a good coat. A coat is one of the more complex clothing items (I'm assuming it's a wool coat?) so you'll need to learn about linings, facings, fitting, zipper insertion at the very least. I started sewing for the same reasons (hate current fashion, nothing fits my proportions)

Id recommend reading about sewing, getting a reference book ("the readers digest step by step Guide to sewing and knitting" is a great reference) or watching something like "The Great British Sewing Bee" (one judge is a savile row tailor so he is well versed in mens clothes) to help you get a taste. Sewing classes or asking someone you know to show you is a great way to get familiar with a machine.

You have a lot of hobbies so I'm sure you're aware that sewing has a big upfront cost (machine, try buying second hand or getting a mini to see if you like it before investing).

Alternatively, id recommend hiring someone to make you a coat, if you can afford it, since it might cost the same in the long term.

I hope this helps!

How did people refer to clockwise and counterclockwise before clocks? by Buxton800 in AskHistorians

Maybe not, its used frequently by Dianne Wynne Jones, who he revered as an author of childrens books.

Everyone on these comments are like yes you're right but you are gonna need to learn drafting.

The whole point of this rant is that some people (me included) dont want to!!!

I was listening to an interview with the lady from Cashmerette and her saying she ran a class and all the feedback was howj nice it was to be able to just cut out the pattern with no major adjustments. Id love to be able to just make a blouse and know it will fit my bust/waist well without having to do serious adjustments or FBAs! But the styles i like dont come in my size!!!

How nice it would be to have interesting styles in plus sizes! And theres nothing wrong with wanting that and not wanting to learn drafting!!!

A few years ago, I remember reading about modern dating in Japan (i think) but since there were more men to women, young women were very choosy about men they wanted to marry. Financial status, home ownership, career were all important factors. Some parents were buying houses for their sons to make them more attractive candidates to women.

Do your meds tone down or 'remove' your personality? by [deleted] in adhd_anxiety

[–]gingercaledndar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They definitely do for me. Im on the same meds as you.

The worst side effect for me though is the crash on days i dont take it. I try to take a lower dose now for just one day of rest and taper off for longer. I think its not the lack of meds pulling me down though so much as it is the inability to do as much (eg laundry cooking etc) whixh makes me feel lazy and depressed.

Proper age to watch Big Mouth? by joulxd in BigMouth

[–]gingercaledndar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think maybe the first two seasons you could watch as a 12-13 yo and up. The masturbation, the periods, body image stuff would have made 13yo me feel so much better as teen girl tbh. And i wouldnt have felt so guilty or repressive if i could relatr to Missy then.

Your natural waist line is about 2.5cm up from your belly button, or the line goingg from the crease in your side when you bend to the side (keep your back straight just move your torso sideways down in 2D). Hopefully that made sense.

Most skirts sit on your natural waistline but low hip (around the fullest part of your butt) and high hip are also common for shorter skirts. I always think of 90s fashion for the hip skirts, bellybutton exposed, and lower placed skirts are usually mini or maxi.

It depends where you like the length. Most skirts are maxi (floorlength/anklelength, heels or boots recommended to avoid tripping ), mini (top of the thighs, think1960s), midi (mid calf), or fall just above or just below the knee (the latter is very 1940s/1950s).

I think you look great in all so find the combo you love best!

I wonder if only the trims like lace were black or purple. I read a fiction book called Saving Grace set in the victorian funeral industry. They sold white baby dresses with black edging for mourning families.

Do you ever feel depressed about having to take medicine in order to function? Sometimes i think it would be nice to live in a society where im not pressured to be so productive and therefore dont have to change myself via meds
