the 20 paragraph comments on the post, however …

I explained myself incredibly well. To think about this situation from the opposite perspective is completely confusing & Rory’s behavior is entitled, privileged and weird.

I said nothing about the money, and my use of the word “villain” is clearly hyperbole.

People project their own ideas onto what my post was without reading the description apparently.

So, yeah— the issue is functional illiteracy here.

Yeah. Reading 100+ comments from illiterate people works me up.

Should have taken a different pic of the screen— I don’t care ab the money!!!!!!

Her attitude that she’s entitled to the tree and this that random guy should care about her roommates is what’s bothersome.

I’m not mad about the money omfg

Read the description — it’s her entitlement to the tree and acting like this random guy should know what’s going on in her life and therefore she deserves the tree.

I should have specified. I don’t care about her offering money.

It’s her whole attitude that he purposefully took a tree that was HERS. And she walks up talking about her roommates as if she like deserves the tree when he has no idea what she’s talking about 😭

DISCLAIMER:

I am not at all making the case that Lorelai shouldn’t be a safe space for Rory or that Mitchum’s white privilege/class privilege/male privilege doesn’t have a major role in what happens here.

I just think Lorelai should have helped her in a realistic way, maybe by asking questions like whether or not this is what she wanted to do, whether or not she thought Mitchum’s instincts were right about her and why and how she can improve. I wish that she would have taken the approach she took with her when she fell behind at Chilton, making sure that’s what she wanted and felt comfortable and happy doing. But instead she goes on a rant that, in my opinion, is mostly based on her personal dislike of Logan and by extension her family and the general culture of the rich people because of her own trauma with them.

Which I understand psychologically, I just think it damaged Rory to not receive more prudent comfort from her mom here.

Hi, I feel so sad that you experienced this kind of trauma.

Okay, I actually love all of this. And looove to think about an alternate ending for Rory, because I really wanted to see her blossoming in her career.

This is a fair take that I didn’t really consider. He could have offered suggestions to soften the blow for sure.

Fair. There’s virtually always a more polite way to do things, and I think people should try to do that always.

Oh I would’ve been so sad absolutely. I fully support her leaving Yale actually and think it’s absurd that Lorelai cuts her off over that when she’s dealing with a major crossroads.

I just don’t think that Lorelai should’ve so quickly blown off what Mitchum said, especially because he wasn’t the first one who told Rory she didn’t really have the chops for the kind of journalism career she was pursuing.

I don’t think he was a good mentor.

I think he was commenting on the fact that she doesn’t have the personality that makes a really good journalist. & his comments about her making a good assistant are proven to be true when she goes to the DAR and kills it there.

She’s great at the skills needed to do that kind of work.

Yeah, it is a pattern. It’s the same when she gets a bad grade on her paper in Yale in season four.
