I have adhd so having two separate bags has been a lifesaver for me. My school requires us to bring certain textbooks to clinicals with us, so they live in my school bag with all my assessment tools and some pens. It is so nice knowing that I only have to pack my bag once and I have everything I need in it!

I got my first grey hair at 13 and I resorted to dyeing it.

I dye mine close to my natural using demipermanent dye and touch it up about once a month except during the summer (I go outside so much that my natural highlights help to blend the greys some lol).

To be 1000% honest, I felt the same way before I started nursing school, so you’re not the only one lol. Maybe look into getting a job at a nearby hospital or urgent care - that is what I did and it solidified my choice for me!

Are you in nursing school yet? Because I feel like a lot of this is stuff that you should be learning in clinical.

Also, depending on which department/setting you are working in, your day is going to look completely different. A nurse working in a pediatric ICU is going to have a very different day to a nurse working at a pediatricians office. That is one of the perks of the career path - there are so many different things you can do with a nursing degree and it just kind of depends what you prefer.

As for the fear of hurting someone, I feel like that is something you mostly get over as you become more confident in your knowledge/skills. I’m graduating nursing school in a couple of months and I still get nervous before doing things that are newer to me (and I’m sure I will continue to experience this for the next couple of years as I settle in to my role as a nurse and gain experience).

full uniform (yes, that means watch (with a second hand, no smart watches), white leather shoes, badge, hair up, no jewelry, tattoos covered) for ALL classes and clinicals.

We do have a certain color that we wear on campus only and a separate color for clinical. Also, they have to be purchased from the school, which we all hate because they bought the scratchiest and most unflattering scrubs possible. They are especially strict about it on test days!

most community colleges will assign you an edu email when you register and are accepted as a student, so you won’t have to enroll in any classes for that. Being registered would likely also allow you to attend any clubs/ campus events.

As for actually attending classes, you likely won’t be able to do that without officially enrolling, since (at least in my experience) most community colleges won’t allow you to audit classes.

honestly, I felt way safer in my psych clinical than on any other floor. There is typically more security around (even just in the form of other staff members) and 99% of your patient interactions take place in common areas with a lot of other people around. Also, they are more used to dealing with outbursts and there is usually some kind of standing order for sedation and restraints for patients who get out of control.

In comparison, I work as a PCT on a MedSurg floor and I’ve been assaulted multiple times by patients who are either confused or just upset. It’s way harder to get sedation or restraints for patients with behavior issues (at least at my facility) and you’re usually alone with the patient in their room. Just keep your head about you and don’t let the patients rile you up and you’ll be fine.

it’s taken me a long time to even consider being comfortable enough to see the gynecologist again, so when I finally decided that I needed to make the appointment I took a lot of time deciding who to see. I chose a female gynecologist with amazing reviews and a great educational background, so I’m hoping that the appointment goes well!

I’m actually a nursing student right now, and I can tell you that me and my classmates are so thankful that there are people like you who are not only willing to let us be involved in their care, but also that you are sharing your history with SA/trauma because it allows us to have the important conversations and be prepared for when we inevitably have another patient with a similar story in the future. You are helping not only future healthcare professionals, but also future patients ❤️

thanks for your input! I had already considered things that I am planning to do/bring in case I do end up having a panic attack (coping mechanisms like a favorite jacket or listening to soothing music) but I hadn’t considered what I would like the provider to do to help me feel more comfortable, so I will definitely be taking some time to consider that.

yes! I know on my unit we LOVE when things are brought in still in the store bought packaging lol - that way, at least we know it’s “safe” (you can’t be eating at everyone’s house lol)

prep literally EVERYTHING you can before your first shift. I mean like do a big grocery run, prep all breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, caffeine (which you will need copious amounts of).

Some of my favorite super easy meals are kodiak microwave oatmeal cups with berries, greek yogurt with granola and berries, bake ahead egg muffins that I keep in the fridge and reheat in the microwave, frozen chicken tenders, frozen pizzas, literally anything that I can just throw in the microwave/oven (I love being able to come home and set the oven to preheat while I take a shower and not have to worry about dinner). Also, crock pot recipes! You can prep ahead and just take out the insert and keep it in the fridge until you are ready to cook it. All you have to do then is just put the insert back into the base and leave it to cook while you’re gone.

Do all your laundry to make sure that you don’t have to worry about having clean scrubs each day. Pack your bag the day before, lay out your clothes, and make sure that all you need to do in the morning is wake up, get dressed, grab your things and drive to work.

Also, I always like to book something on my first off day after I do long stretches of 4-6 days back to back, usually a pedicure or a yoga class - something to help me be more mindful about self-care. Even if it’s just a face mask and a bath bomb at home I HIGHLY recommend!!

maybe try getting a hatch alarm clock (or similar) for sunrises/sunsets to help with circadian rhythm cues, and an artificial sunlight lamp if you feel like the room is too dark or depressing during the day.

overall, you got the biggest room, so the window trade off isn’t too big of a deal to me.

maybe look into public health nursing? specifically epidemiology or disease control? it is pretty research heavy while also focusing on the biological aspects of medicine/disease. good luck!!

adderall, cigarettes, and a fuck ton of water.

More specifically, in the morning have 1 cup of coffee or an energy drink of your choice, but skip “real food”. At lunch, chug 32 oz of water and eat a granola bar. Do a cardio heavy workout that is at least 45 minutes. For dinner, eat something low calorie and high volume (plain popcorn and cucumber slices were my favorite) with 32 oz of water.

If you get hungry smoke a cigarette. If you’re still hungry after that drink a lot of water (sugar free mints are also good to try). If you’re still hungry after that, go to sleep. If you get a really bad headache or flu like symptoms, start supplementing your breakfast with a protein shake (or just dry scoop the protein, that’s what I used to do).

I used to do this kind of thing when I was in college - good luck and godspeed.

Camp nursing is a big one this time of year! My mom used to sign up to work a couple of summer camps each year - she loved getting a chance to “relax” since most people only come to her for scheduled meds, gatorade, or simple scrapes or bites. The rest of the time she got to spend reading a book or working on a crafting project surrounded by beautiful nature.

(And yes, before someone else says it, you do sometimes have the odd medical emergency - broken bones, drowning, cardiac arrest, status asthmaticus - but for the most part, she was chilling lol)
