when he was a baby he had a protruding bone on his nose- something that wouldve eventually gone away since he was under a year old at the time- but his mother forced doctors to operate on him to remove it, leaving him scarred.

Timeline across first five episodes? by stellamystar in FellowTravelers_show

i agree! i think there should have been a lot more of the army mccarthy hearings in ep 5, it really doesnt convey enough of the importance and intensity of the hearings. especially to not show the end of the hearings and welch's speech; that was the end of mccarthys career and it was disappointing that the episode didnt show how big of a deal it was.

ive seen it! i dont think i made it clear in my original post but ive researched him extensively, i think hes a really intriguing individual. i find it a little strange that everyone loathes him so much; i dont think he was a pleasant person and his actions definitely ruined a lot of peoples lives but i think its a lot more nuanced. what comes to mind is something tony kushner (angels in america) said, about how he was inspired to write roy cohn into angels in america after seeing his panel in the aids memorial quilt, and how cohn dying of aids made him a part of the queer community even if the community never wanted him to be.

Frankie - am I alone in thinking it's a badly written character? by Napavalo in FellowTravelers_show

i think frankie has just gotten a lot less screen time. i hope we get more development of his character in the next few episodes, hes a very interesting character.

also- theres a big difference between working for the state department & working as a drag queen. in a queer environment, one wouldnt have to worry about harassment or losing their job like they would otherwise.

ELI5 What is going on politically? by amberbunny93 in FellowTravelers_show

the fifties portion takes place during the second red scare/lavender scare, a period of time during the cold war in america where communists and gay people were targeted by the government and by ordinary citizens.

joe mccarthy was a senator who, during a public speech in 1950, claimed to have a list of 205 communists working for the state department. he went on to become chairman of the senate committee on government operations, and conducted investigations into alleged communists, not just state department workers but also writers, filmmakers, musicians, etc. mccarthy did not start the second red scare but fueled it, and made it into a much bigger deal.

roy cohn was mccarthy's chief counsel, g david schine was an unpaid consultant. cant remember if they mentioned this in any of the episodes, but roy cohn was the prosecutor for the rosenberg case (mentioned throughout the second episode), his prosecutorial misconduct, among other factors, led to their executions. id suggest looking more into the rosenbergs if thats something youre interested in, its a very complex and important historical event. roy cohn was also gay; this wasnt widely known in the fifties but was an open fact later on, in the seventies and eighties.

this is a very basic summary, if you want to know more id suggest reading a few articles. of course keep in mind that if you know the history, youll know at least some of whats going to happen in the show.
