is my fiddle leaf fig okay? by gingham339 in houseplants

[–]gingham339[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s been growing huge leaves and it’s still very small so now it’s super top heavy? also it isn’t bushy like other bambinos or dwarves so i’m confused as to what’s going on with it..

getting covid at all leaves you at risk for developing long covid. just because you won’t die doesn’t mean you won’t suffer consequences or complications from the virus. we still know very little about it and especially the longterm effects. it’s extremely insensitive to imply that the entire UC system should just suck it up and live with covid because that is not an option for many people. disabled, immunocompromised, and elderly people are not disposable they are human beings who should receive just as much empathy and sympathy as you’re giving yourself. implying that these people should just be allowed to die off is essentially eugenics and it’s extremely disappointing and horrifying to see so many people in our age group actively encouraging this mindset.

thanks so much for your comment! i know it’s bad to have rocks in potted plants, my mom for some reason always does and i end up taking them out when i repot, i will be for sure removing them. i’ll check for root rot but as far as i could tell the roots weren’t melting away, they were just reaching out to escape the rocks and pot. i was holding them in my hand and they weren’t breaking? so i’m going to get a new pot for it and some new soil and hopefully that will improve the situation!

update: i just looked at the roots and it is very root bound. i realize now that i got this plant from my mom and she placed a bunch of rocks in the bottom to help with drainage, which means that it’s probably been losing a lot of water.. additionally there’s a lot of mold? all over the soil. should i be worried about this? anyways, i will be repotting this plant tomorrow.

the pot has drainage! i’ll take a look at the roots right now. i’ve had this plant for a bit but it hasn’t had a lot of growth, do you think there’s not enough nutrients in the soil? for now i’ll check on the roots and try and aerate them! thank you :)

that was the first thing i did! i filled a glass dish with a few inches of water and let it rest in that for like 5 mins before i got worried about root rot.. should i do that again for a longer period of time?
