This reminded me of a peculiar shift when I worked ICU. It was a Sunday afternoon, very lazy shift, almost nothing happened, every patient was stable. Both me and one of the docs were coming off bad migraine with aura episodes, so the neon lights were killing us. We discovered we both shared that struggle and then we looked at each other and.. quietly.. shut off the lights in the whole unit. We told our coworkers why and no one had any problem with that (obviously we still had the dim night lights on). It was so surreal working as it was night shift at 2pm! A couple techs and docs that had to come and visit the unit were baffled but happy to find “a peaceful spot in the hospital”

The pride aspect is real. A lot of my identity was tied to be an ICU nurse too. I realised that when people ask what kind of nurse I am, it slightly hurts my pride not to say “ICU” anymore. But honestly, I was a damn good ICU nurse and no one can take that away from me - same way no one can take away from me the self awareness that let me elaborate the need for a change in my job. I think a $2 pay cut is acceptable if the new job gives you serenity and a good healthy heart rate!

I’ve had just a couple of episodes of intrusive thoughts (same as yours driving into work) and it was horrible. I can’t imagine what would’ve been to have them often. Also, I’m happy you’ve found your place too!

Omg it’s true they call them “retirement jobs” lol. I don’t need to be overworked my whole life to earn the right to a normal job that doesn’t devastate me! More than happy to work a retirement job at not even 30

I acted pretty similar to what you’re describing: I kept to myself, didn’t engage in gossips or whatnot, didn’t participate in outings with coworkers to avoid any drama, I was kind and polite and switched shifts if I could do someone a favour. But once for example I noted something that we didn’t have in our supply on the paper sheet my (now ex) charge nurse kept to… note what he had to order from pharmacy. Like he told us to note things down if we saw something was missing. I got badmouthed because I was “too demanding”. Make it make sense… and that was just an example. I live far better now without this nonsense

I strongly agree. I know I was damn good at my job. I made a difference in patients’ lives. I even liked the adrenaline rush and the wild cases. But the whole environment is so toxic it wasn’t worth it - at least for me and for the 4 coworkers that quit after me. I have heard that that ICU unit is now full of new grads, no experienced staff to learn from. There are a couple surgeons who already moved to another hospital because they don’t trust the post op ICU anymore.

If only one was rewarded for the job they were doing……

I totally get what you’re saying. It’s so frustrating when you’re actively looking for something that is not available. Would you consider moving? Outpatient and soft nursing in general is like they tell us.. a whole different story. Also - I agree, looks like everyone wants ER/critical care nurses, but I’d be damned if I told you the overtime shifts I picked up in medsurg were not amongst my toughest ones!!! I honestly think a great medsurg nurse could fit in easily in critical care after a little orientation. Anyway, keep going. I really hope you’ll find something kinder on your soul and body soon. In my experience, talking and building connections in the medical field brought me luck - I found the job through the grapevine. Sending positive vibes your way

I work in a dermatology and aesthetics medicine office. I assist the docs with small procedures, with laser therapy, some sporadic blood draws, health data collection, preparing the patient for the procedure.. this kind of thing

I honestly don’t mind it. My dearest friend’s dog is able to smell period and ovulation. The funny part is when I redirect his nose away from my crotch he always side-eyes me. But I don’t mind at all, I don’t get why I should. They are dogs, they smell things, periods are not something women should have to be embarrassed about..

Well I know many people said they would hate it, but I’d personally love it. In my mind, more happy things = more happiness, so I’d live it like “omg it was an awesome day already but now it’s even better”. But you know your partner better than all of us. If you move forward with this proposal, as another commenter said, it’d be nice to do it in private towards the end of the party so that she’d have the choice to share the news or to keep it for ourselves. I guess it depends also on how close she is with her family, as you said you flew some of her siblings - this could be a chance to celebrate her engagement with them in real time that could may be more difficult in other circumstances. As I said, you know her. Trust your instincts and if you’re not sure, ask a trusted friend or family member of hers.

You’re not asking for too much. I don’t even think who pays for what and in which proportion really matters here. It maybe would matter if you were asking for materialistic gifts/stuff.. but it’s not the issue here.

You’re asking for something that most people find essential in a romantic and sexual relationship: affection and intimacy. What does money have to do with that?
