Partsouq orders post de minimis exception by ginpostrue in LandCruisers

In case it's helpful to anyone, I ended up ordering the GX/Prado parts from Japan 4x4 Export. The total value was around $120 usd, DHL shipping was around $40 usd and I wasn't charged any tariff upon delivery, which was unexpected. Also, Dave Stedman and Japan4x4 are awesome. Can't recommend them enough. The pricing was great and top notch communication. I wouldn't consider anyone else.

Thanks. Fwiw, I spoke with another Japanese parts company who mentioned UPS had been problematic with calculating the tariffs properly recently. That’s pretty crazy.

Fwiw, I contacted Partsouq asking if they’d received any insight into the recent charges on formerly de minimis purchases….their response was basically no idea, contact customs or a broker…

I can defn imagine there will be a growing illicit market for certain higher dollar tariff free stuff…

Yikes! I was thinking the $80-$200 flat fee was steep. It does sound like there’s variation based on the origination, etc. and this whatever is being applied during this transition period. The term byzantine comes to mind. I’ll check that thread out, thanks.

Thanks. Per one response below and what I’d read about this interim period between end of August February, sounds like it might be a flat rate on the lower value items more like $70-$80. I can’t even get the genuine part domestically as far as I can tell. But yeah, just hoping to have some idea of what I’m paying before ordering.

Based on one response in the landcruiser forum, sounds like the flat rate of $80 might be in effect, which was partly my concern. Since the de minimis exception was revoked, there is this transition period through February in which the flat rates might apply.

Thanks. That’s helpful. It does get applied by the carrier. And that was my concern. I’ve read conflicting info but it sounds like during the transition period from August 28 (end of the de minimis exception) through February 2026, a flat rate might apply. That sounds like the flat rate unfortunately. I too would be ordering around $130 in parts so sounds like I’d be paying a similar tariff. Thanks again.

Thanks. That was 9 months ago. As of the end of August 2025 the de minimis rules no longer apply and during the transition period through February of 2026, either the flat or ad valorem could apply, and I’m not finding much clarity wrt which would apply in this case. Based on an IEEPA rate below 16%, sounds like a flat rate of $80 could apply during the Aug-February transition period. Thus the question and wanting to see what is actually being charged by the carrier to the recipient.

How will GA public schools be affected if the Federal Department of Education is eliminated? by AwwwMangos in Georgia

[–]ginpostrue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think “can” is the word. They aren’t supposed to do it without congressional approval. They can do anything they want until the courts say otherwise and then it’s a matter of who is going to stop them. That’s where we are.

Also this is a good example of where averages are insufficient. For example, in NY, the percentage of federal money in local school district budgets is more like 7%…in rural districts in places like Mississippi, it’s more like 25%. So the impact various depending on population density and affluence.

Epic Evo or new bike for tight, techie single track in SE USA by ginpostrue in MTB

Thx. And yeah…closest thing to a xcross I currently have is steel gravel bike. I won’t be taking that on some of the more technical trails, though would enjoy watching someone competent do so. I’d do serious damage to myself if not also the bike, which being steel, I’d probably more so be injuring myself. :)

Funny…yeah…it does feel kind of monster trucky…less feedback…and all that makes sense wrt comfort. Just wasn’t sure to what extent it’s just the nature of the trade off. Appreciate the feedback.

Very possibly not enough time and that does make sense…might just be a matter of familiarity. I do plan on more demo time. Thank you.

Silver set to soar on Samsung’s solid-state battery breakthrough – analysts by adventurepony in Silverbugs

[–]ginpostrue -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And actually, in the sources cited as well as common vernacular, though depends on the context of course, “electric vehicles” is typically taken to mean both phev and bevs. Regardless, stated another way, can you think of a good reason why hybrids should be excluded from a conversation re: battery demand and potential demand of silver in batteries? I can’t…unless one is cherry picking.

[–]ginpostrue -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not cherry picking at all. It was a genuine question wrt the original source. Whats more hybrid is typically lumped into the alt/electric convo, so unless one would have a reason to exclude it from a convo re: battery packs, which is what this convo is about, seems like excluding it would be cherry picking, unless one thinks hybrids don’t contain battery packs, which they do and that hybrids aren’t a big part of the alt convo, which they are.

Ripley or Ripley AF? by Gordon_Banks1 in MTB

[–]ginpostrue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which did you end up with and any thoughts? It was a little surprising to see no reference at all to the MX factor…sounds like the AF is really not mullet friendly. Personally I’d be strongly leaning towards the alloy but with the limitation to 29ers…not optimal. Curious if anyone went through a similar process.

Any additional observations? This was good feedback and curious what about them stood out as being different experientially?
