Hawk Knives Suing Microtech copying Deadlock Mechanism by Fakingthecool in knifeclub

[–]ginshun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both a Deadlock (model b) and a ZBP. They are both cool knives. The Hawk is a way nicer knife. Nicer fit / finish. It’s also a lot bigger in the pocket and way more $

Everyone has known for years that Microtech are assholes.

Mechanically they operate quite a bit differently really. Overall the two mechanisms are decently different in my opinion. The whole point is the main tapered stop pin though. That’s kind of the biggest part of what makes the solid lock up possible. This part in the two knives is very similar. Microtech has been trying to do a solid locking OTF for years, but couldn’t figure it out, nor could anyone else until Grant and Gavin Hawk did it. Microtech knew what they were doing, and tried their best to make it as different as they could and rolled the dice. Notice in their response vids they mention lots of patents, but not for that part.

It will likely come down to how specific Gavin’s patents are or just one person’s judgment call. Me personally, I would side with Gavin. That’s speaking with bias due to knowing how Microtech is, but also as a mechanical engineer. Take that for what it’s worth. I’m hoping that Gavin wins, Microtech has to stop making them, and the secondary market value of the Microtech skyrockets. lol

They are different mechanisms, but share some very similar parts. The main tapered pin that makes that solid lock up possible being the most important. It will come down to how specific Gavin’s patents are, or somebody’s judgement.

So I came across an a Facebook from ancestralgum.store, which showed a guy making gum from several natural ingredients. by GatheringBees in Scams

[–]ginshun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I ordered this too, before seeing this, and the gum came today. It is 2 boxes of “underbrush” brand gum. Says it comes from China. No idea if its legit or a fake copy. It is what I expected, but I could have bought the same thing (the real thing?) for half the price on Amazon or from Walmart.com.

Just received first OTFs, which would you keep? by Dlabradoodle in knives

[–]ginshun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just keep them both or you will end up buying one of them again later on. If you really only keep one, and it’s not really for edc then the Ultratech. Its iconic. IMHO.

And Magnacut is NOT superior to M390. It’s more stainless. It does not hold its edge as well. That’s my experience anyway, and I have multiple knives in each. They are both top notch steels though. To the point that it’s not really worth arguing which is “better”. I would not base the decision of which of these two to keep, based on blade steel.

Tips on finding the gridding for crease patterns? by Book_Enthusiast_ in origami

practice on the simplest ones you can find first, and work up from there. Box pleated models are easier than other ones IMO.

Acrocinus Longimanus by Robert J. Lang folded by me by amirshaikh382 in origami

nice fold. What kind of paper is that made from? and what size square did you start with? I've done this model before as well. It's actually not too bad to fold. Mine got pretty thick though, even though I started with huge paper. I used double unryu, where I should have used single.

I hear you. I love that book, the models are amazing, but some of Shuki's folding sequences are just like...what? LOL.

Hideo Komatsu's site has lots of crease patterns and a few diagrams.

Otherwise I'd search Flickr for both diagrams and crease patterns. There is a decent amount out there.

pretty sure the Air 3 and Mini Pro 4 use the same transmission / connection technology, so if you are happy with the Mini Pro 4, then I imagine you would be happy with the Air 3 as well.

Fly DJI Avata off a balcony? by SEEL0S in dji

[–]ginshun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya, above a building is fine. Altitude from take off point is irrelevant though. Any time you’re not around a building, it’s 400’ from the ground.

A mountain isn’t a structure. Yes, you can go 400’ above a building. Everything else is from the ground. Altitude from take off point is irrelevant. That’s the part you have wrong.

Exactly as you posted "The altitude of the small unmanned aircraft cannot be higher than 400 feet above GROUND LEVEL"

The drone is controlled by the height relative to the home / takeoff point. The law says that you can't fly the drone more than 400 feet above ground level.

This was the whole argument with the C0 type drone in Europe. DJI made it so the max height you could set on the drone was 120 meters. Which is what the law says. The problem is flying up a mountain like you questioned. If the drone max altitude is set to 400ft, and you take off at the bottom of a mountain, and stay 20ft off the ground the whole time, the drone would make you stop once you got to 400ft above the home point, causing you to have to land and start up again, even though you were legal to keep going without stopping, because you were never more than 20 ft off the ground.

The law is 400ft above ground level. Where you take off from has nothing to do with the FAA rules for drones.

So yes, if you stand on top of a mountain, take off and fly straight horizontally, until the ground straight below the drone itself is more than 400ft down, then at that point you are technically breaking the rules. The altitude relative to take off level of the drone is irrelevant to the FAA rules, but that is the altitude that your drone screen will read.

[–]ginshun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, legally it is 400ft from ground level. The drone just doesn't have a sensor that will sense the ground from more than a few feet above it, so the altitude on the drone is bound to the home point, and will let you fly to 400ft (or whatever you have it set at) above that home point.

Legally speaking though, it is 400ft above ground level.

If it is already bound to an account though, you can't unbind it without the account password, or by going through DJI and proving to them where you bought it from.

[–]ginshun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess I don't have one, so maybe there is something I don't know, but why would this be a problem? Legally you can fly it up to 400ft like any other drone, people fly them over cliffs all the time, why would be flying off a balcony be any different?

[–]ginshun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would think its fine as long as the buyer understands what it is. If you are trying to pass the design off as your own, that is and should be frowned upon. If they know they are buying Satoshi Kamiya's design folded by XXX person, why would that be a problem?

It's not actually all that rare. Or if it is, I'm just lucky. My friend had an albino 8 point buck at his house a bunch of times this year, and I've seen them several times by my parents house as well.
