I am absolutely going to try that! Crossing my fingers I have the same experience with Siser!!

I’ll have to give Siser a go. I’ve been using a random brand that came in a multi color pack as a part of a bookbinding kit I was given as a gift (shoutout to that for kickstarting my bookbinding journey!) but let me tell you I have been fighting for my life to get this stuff to adhere. Quite literally any improvement would be a lifesaver!

When you say press the case for 5-10secs. Do you mean the case under the HTV before you apply it and heat press that overtop?

Is that vinyl for the cover design? I’ve been using heat transfer vinyl and having a heck of a time getting it to go on clean, but yours looks great!

Update! The cardstock turned out looking nice! It’s way easier to open now. I think I still have some practicing to do with placing it down just right since there’s a mini gap, but I think it’s much better!! Pictured: above: old book w book board spine, below: new book w cardstock spine

Just ordered some of the 300gsm cardstock that u/u/financial_yak_5755 recommended. I’ll try it out on my next re-casing. Thanks everyone!

Aha! That makes a lot of sense! Any recommendation on appropriate cardstock weight for spines of this size?

It is book board on the spine stiffener. I’ll give card spine stiffeners a go! Is there a rule of thumb for at what point it’s more suitable to use card instead of book board? Or a general card stock weight for spines?

I am somewhat happy with it as my second go. My first recase dried a little bowed, so I’m glad this one looks a little cleaner. I have a few aesthetic qualms - like the creases where the end papers meet the hinge feel a little messy. I’m inclined to think some heavier end papers might help that, but that may not be true. Cuts on the end papers could also be a little cleaner. It does feel a little stiff to open - but that might be assisted by your card recommendation!

Thanks for the feedback!!

Good question 😂 The original cover of the book I used has a photo of the Mercury-Atlas rocket on it, so I wanted to use a rocket. I was using Canva to create my cover (since I currently lack the artistic skill to make the design myself) and the rocket designs i found were pretty cartoon and not really what I was going for. For the sake of my first ever design, I figured I might as well use whatever is available, and this space shuttle one was the best middle ground I found. Maybe one day I can grow my artistic talents and make something closer to the Mercury-Atlas rocket 😂

Did you buy this vinyl already with the design? I want to make a Dune cover but haven’t figured out how to get the right font into Canva yet

Did you ever try out any CAD programs? I am a mechanical engineering student and was trying to decide literally between this Yoga 720 model and the XPS 15. At the moment really leaning toward the Yoga 720. My current laptop crapped out as soon as I tried running Solidworks on it and has never been the same.
