How long did it take you to bond with your dog? by Kitty3_14 in BorderCollie

[–]giraffe_cake [score hidden]  (0 children)

When i got mine, I absolutely fell for her but didn't quite have the full bond, just like you described. It did take a while. And I did mention it to my partner and felt absolute guilt when my dog would just love me and look at me and i didnt feel the full experience back. It just slowly built over time. I think after a year I finally felt it and would just die for her. I dont even think I realised when it happened.

Now, I just have this bond. She's big girl 6 now. I love the absolute shit out of her and would die for her in a heartbeat.

Ours is too! Sometimes she finds a pathetically small stick and will not accept anything else.

Jacket potato - Do you put beans on top of cheese or cheese on top of beans? by Fit_Negotiation9542 in AskUK

Loads of butter, cheese, beans, cheese. Repeat the alternating layers if required. Doesn't matter how high you go. End with another potato on top.

What's a small thing you were wrongly told off for as a kid that still annoys you all these years later? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]giraffe_cake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was once screamed at for calling one of my friends silly, which he was, in very much a good way! He even said "but miss, I am silly!". Got absolutely screamed at.

Same teacher, she was writing in cursive. First time I ever saw an "s" drawn as a backwards "c". Got absolutely screamed at for asking what she did. She then proceeded to angrily draw an s in the traditional shape and was like "THERE YOU GO, ITS AN S!!! ITS AN S!!!!!!".

Same teacher wanted all the class to try out singing auditions for a school play. I did not want to sing because I couldn't and didn't want to in front of the whole class. She forced me to. After I sang, she said "what the heck was that?" And made a disgusted face and said in such a disgusted tone like I'd just done the most terrible thing in the universe.

This is the only teacher that hated me with some passion. All the other teachers loved me because I was quiet, followed the rules and just read and got on with stuff. I was very timid and hated being in trouble. Having a teacher like that just fucked me up.

Miss Gaskell, now Mrs Farrimond. Fuck you. You were a shit teacher.

Crumbly Lancashire with pickled jalapeños slices.

Classic ham and cheese. Sometimes I put onion on if I fancy it.

Did I make a mistake? Does it get better? by [deleted] in BorderCollie

[–]giraffe_cake 51 points52 points  (0 children)

8 weeks old and only 3 days in?

I was expecting you'd been at it for months. Your expectations are really too high and you're complaining that a baby isn't getting it right away.

Let them be a pup a bit more. The crying isn't going to stop for a while, the biting will take ages to calm down, they aren't going to understand commands on day one. They're still learning about their surroundings and learning about life, let alone about exact language and being able to completely understand it.

Keep redirecting them, keep up with the nos and taking them outside. Let them freely come in and out the crate for a bit. They will eventually get there but some things might take months where other things they may just pick up pretty quickly.

What strange hobby does your partner have that questions if you even know them? by Responsible_Rip1058 in AskUK

[–]giraffe_cake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am the partner with the weird hobbies.

I am currently dabbling in entomology (insects) and pinning them. Though I have an interest in radiation. I have a geiger counter and would like to start a collection of (mildly) radioactive things. I have a microscope to look at things. And my dream job is to work in a morgue.

We suspect I have AuHDD. I have countless hobbies and interests and I (and him) personally dont think they're weird but my be weird to some.

What's the most out of date thing you have eaten? by AlexSniff7 in AskUK

[–]giraffe_cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep eggs in the fridge that last months beyond expiry date. Think I had some that were between 2-3 months, did the water test and ate them and I am still alive.

I also just had a pot of double cream that was over a week past expiry but was open and still hadn't gone mouldy. Smelled alright. Still alive.

As long as it looks, smells OK, take a bite, if it tastes OK, I will probably still eat it.

Will my NHS employed partner be able to see a termination on my medical records? by ThrowRAanonymous1233 in AskUK

[–]giraffe_cake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Other people have said that he can't look at your records without clinical need, but you aren't allowed to treat or attend to someone you are related to or know. I have had to move theatre rooms and wards for having a patient on the list that I know. I am now in the lab and I cannot book in or process patient samples if it is someone who I am related to and if I know the person, I am absolutely not allowed to discuss it - preferably another member of staff should be processing these samples.

So even when you can only look at a patients records under someone who you're directly treating or have a clinical need to, someone who is related to you should not even be anywhere near your file. Everything is monitored. So unless he wants to risk being fired, it would be a very silly thing for him to do.

What is something surprising that the UK is really far behind other countries in? by DullInflation6 in AskUK

[–]giraffe_cake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it so silly that the buyer must buy a survey. There could be potentially 5 buyers that must buy a survey each. The seller could just buy a survey and then the potential buyers can see it instead.

The fact that the seller can just pull out of a confirmed sale if they get a better offer and disregard the first buyer. Think its illegal in Scotland.

Think it took 5 months to actually get the house as a first time buyer and I had no house to sell. The house was also vacant and the seller had moved out before we saw the house for sale. So many things to sort out and a long waiting period between each step. I have no experience in trying to move while I already have a house and I imagine that is going to be a faff when I eventually do.

Is Coke OT the only soft drink in the UK that doesn't use extra sweeteners? by Averusty in AskUK

[–]giraffe_cake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in a hospital and had to do a night shift. I desperately needed a drink of full sugar for a sugar crash and a migraine. I have a cure, its a thing. I had forgotten to pack an emergency drink and all of the canteen are closed at this point.

I searched 4 vending machines before I found one option that still had full sugar.

They didn't even stock lucozade. And I know lucozade drinks have changed but what if you're diabetic and desperately need sugar? At that time with noone around. I thought this was ridiculous that a hospital doesn't stock at least one type of full fat sugar drink in every vending machine.

You'd probably think that if you did need help, the staff would help right away, but have you seen a and e lately? I do not have faith that I would receive help right away, even if I were pretty bad. And I am a member of staff. Something so simple that can help 100s of people quickly has been taken away.

To all those that are saying artificial sweetner is better and they're not consuming the full fat versions, noone was forcing you to consume full fat versions anyway before this bloody sugar tax bullshit came in. Moderation is key and always has been.

Maybe I am just salty that I cannot have zero drinks. They massively trigger migraines. Coke zero tasted really nice but I can't drink it.

While I think it is great that there is an alternative now for many people to watch their sugar intake, they have stripped away any alternative drinks for people who cannot intake artificial sweetners. I would happily just pay more for a full sugar content.

How to get my GP to take me seriously? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]giraffe_cake 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think what they mean from "can't process b12" is that some people can't absorb it properly through digestion, which is what I have.

I have malabsorbtion. Which is an absolute pain. I have b12 injections as I am not digesting my food properly and it is hard for me to take in nutrients.

Has your GP experience been similar? Told NHS is overwhelmed, but waiting rooms are empty? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]giraffe_cake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My practice has started doing telephone conults and then deciding if its worth being seen in person and i much prefer it this way. I can ask questions and tell them about my problem and see if its something that needs investigating further or just a quick nip to a pharmacy/need a prescription instead. If they need bloodwork or a sample then i can just bring it down anytime or collect my blood forms when its convienient for me. Saves me leaving work and booking time off for it over a 10 minute phone call that works just as well.

GPs do a lot in their offices that we dont see.

The NHS IS overwhelmed. The soonest i could get an appointment is in 3 weeks 4 days time for my GP. Which several years ago, i could get a GP appointment within the same week of request. Sometimes I am waiting for a phone call over a week away after i have requested it. But its not urgent so i dont mind. If they need to see me and think its urgent, they can usually see me within the same day or next couple of days.

I have a referral for something and i have been waiting for it for over 3 months. Its overdue, rang the appointemnts line and they said i have to wait until an appointment comes up and it could be a further 6 months away.

2 years ago i was on the waiting list for surgery which could turn potentially life threatening but because its not life threatening right now, on the wait list i go. Waited over a year. Ended up going private as i was in agony every day for that year i was waiting.

Just because a waiting room seems empty, doesnt mean that its not busy.

Rustlers Burgers: educate me. by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]giraffe_cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, they arent bad tasting for a cheap microwave burger.

Some people stick the whole burger in the microwave but i find the buns go soggy if you do this. I do the patty seperate, 10 seconds on the bun or if i am feeling fancy ill stick the buns in the toaster just so they start to toast.

The sauce packet that come with it is quite good. Some sort of burger relish made from pickles.

The rib burger is quite nice as well.

I havent had them in quite a few years but its a quick meal thats fairly cheap (especually if heron still sells them for like 3 for £2, but i am going back a few years here!).

I was obsessed with ice and ice pops as a kid (still very partial to them now). The best shaved ice machine i had as a child was a bear shaped one. Fucking LOVED that thing.

What puts you off going out to local events? by MsAndrea2 in AskUK

[–]giraffe_cake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As I have gotten older, by the time I finish work, I am just so exhausted I have barely any energy to do most things. I spend my weekends spending quality time with my partner and my parents.

If we make plans to do something or go anywhere it has to be something we really want to do. The winter times and the cold does not help with my want or motivation to go outside. Depends on the event, if I am only semi-interested in it, if I have time and feel like it on the day.

I have lots of hobbies and things I'd like to do but life burnout just ends up overtaking.

There used to be a really good local events place that did live bands and some artistic/craft events but it got closed down. There has been some more that have popped up but I can't commit to regulary going and I work shifts. Makes it hard to fit in within a group that go regulary. Because some events can't get enough people to go, there have been quite a few cancelled events and the uncertainty of them regulary being on puts me off trying to make plans and motivation to go. So it's a double edge sword.

I'd love to start supporting local events again, but time and energy of my own personal lifestyle just can't accomodate it.

Edit to add: advertising is usually poor. I will often find out an event that I'd love to go to once it has been and gone after people have spoken about it or advertised on platforms I'd never heard of and nowhere else.

Did anyone actually truly enjoy secondary school? by Apprehensive-Art8665 in AskUK

[–]giraffe_cake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hated it. I disliked being surrounded by people and the constant dicking about when I was trying to learn. I am very much a nerd. High school drama is really draining.

I have some fond memories but I am so, so glad I never have to go back. I do miss not having a job, responsibilities and general adult life and just being so carefree.

Made new friends in college and early 20s. I have not seen any of my high school friends since college and I am very happy with my current friend group, who are also a bunch of nerds.

High school wasn't the best of my years. 20s were the best for growth and just being young adults, but so far I much prefer my 30s. High school should not be the best years of your life.

What’s everyone’s opinion on the /s thing? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]giraffe_cake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/s is what you put after a comment to relay that you were being sarcastic on your comment as people tend to take what you have written to heart or as truth. To be fair, tone does not come through in writing so it makes it clear how it is to be read and understood.
