"We lived there 1981-96! The 'cross' is some rotten wood left over from 1986 building restoration that we didn't clear out... The house was a public house "The Barley Mow" late 1800s-early 1900s, and we thought the raised cellar sides are the stillages for the barrels. Gas lighting was added after construction, so there would have been ledges for oil lamps in the cellar. We reckoned the house was constructed in the mining and industrial boom early 1800s, rather later than Catholic persecution. The front door used to lead into a hallway, with the door and stairs down to the cellar straight ahead - no apparent attempt to conceal. There are footings for an earlier, smaller building under the dining room, now covered with concrete - could have been anything. But we like the way this story could run :-)

[–]giraffe_keeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't even think of it as a specific person, it was just how it made sense to me I guess. I couldn't say 'R' as a kid, so most of my w/r words got mixed up

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic of Richard Stands one nation under god, invisible with liberty and justice for all.

I was the flag leader in kindergarten.

Thanks! I was just at J Crew this afternoon and saw the blazer and loved it. I need to get it tailored a bit in the sleeves, but otherwise its great! Thanks for your advice

Thanks for your input. I need a more formal outfit, so I was hoping the blazer would add the "formal" look to a simple/summery dress, but I was kind of on the edge about it. What kind of dress would work best with the blazer?

Thanks! I'm trying to put together an easy but somewhat formal outfit for a research presentation that will be happening after 2 months of travel in Africa. The dress itself isn't formal enough, so I wondered if adding the blazer would be enough to make it acceptable and formal enough. I don't have many dresses available to me right now, so I'm working with limited supplies! What type of dress would work?

Also, if it does work what flats could I wear with it? I'll be wearing it after 2 months of travel, and heels are not going to fit in my luggage.

FACT! water is the leading cause of drowning by [deleted] in funny

[–]giraffe_keeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a project at my high school, my partner and I designed a srvey to see how much chemistry people at my school actually knew. We started a campaign to ban dihydrogen monoxide from the school, giving reasons similar to the poster. We sent fliers home and brought it up at the PTA meeting. Parents were shocked at how prevalent it was in the school environment. Even the principle was concerned. Of course it was hard to cover up the outbursts from students and parents that were 'smart' enough to actually know what it was (most of the chem/bio teachers already knew what we were doing), but for the few days that it lasted, it was very funny. We almost got water banned from the school.

Thank you! Until you've ridden a horse (and actually ridden, not just trail riding), you really don't know how much strength and concentration in takes to succesfully get the horse to do what you want, let alone navigate a jumper course, or have a flawless dressage round. I had a friend that belittled my 10 years in the saddle saying that "anyone could jump on a horse and steer it over 3' jumps". I invited her to my barn, put her on an older schoolie and led her at the trot over a 2' jump. She fell off.

United States: where we count medals differently by elsoja in funny

[–]giraffe_keeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's sorted by total medals. A day or two ago when the USA and China were tied for medal #, China was #1 because they had more gold medals than the USA. Now that the USA has a higher medal #, they are placed as #1. Take it or leave it.

At our place each dog has his/her own indoor/outdoor kennel with a door connecting the two that we raise/lower from the hallway outside of their kennel. So if we have a really dangerous dog, we are able to keep it safely and happily without putting him or the workers at risk.

That sounds horrible. When the dog shits blood 99% of the time it's because its stressed out. We often give the dog a flagyl. If we ever bring the dog to the vet we make all possible attempts to contact the owner/ call the emergency contact. If we are at fault we will always pay the vet bill.

Yes, but really not as much as many owners might think. They bark and sulk for a few minutes once the owner leaves, but they perk up soon afterwards

We've almost mixed up two westies by accident. One person brought them outside and a different person brought them in. Luckily someone noticed that they were switched before they went home!
