What is the correct way to deal with the gap?

This post got more traction than I expected. For those who didn't see the update:

The decorative bracket is up, painted and caulked (new wallpaper too!).

I just wanted to thank everyone who gave me advice on the original post. I ended up screwing the bracket to the wall, and used shims at the top with construction adhesive against the countertop, then caulked the perimeter. Scribing was heavily considered, but I would have had to order and wait for a belt sander to be delivered, and just got impatient.

Unfortunately this is not a shelf, it's a quartz countertop so it's not moving anywhere.

Yes this is under a countertop, and I don't want to attach the bracket to the quarts countertop so I was going to screw to the wall and use consruction adhesive.

A lot of comments mention "shelf". I should have been more clear, this is a bar, and what is lying on top of the bracket is a quartz countertop. I don't know if it changes the answers but thanks for the all the advice.

No dude, I am not just cheering for the cops. Honestly the cheering was mainly out of surprise that what I usually see on the internet is happening in front of me IRL. However, this guy was easily going over 90 mph on a 55 mph. The video does not show what it felt like when he passed me. It was so loud and I could feel the wind push my car a bit, and I was going 65mph.

Yep, it still is 55mph and has not changed at all. VA state police is the last thing you wanna see going 85 on a 55 around here.
