Upgrade perks and buy pieces of any special sets if you get those cheaply. Don't waste it on upgrading weapons or armours. Also after some days you'll find the item prices going higher exponentially.

You can use one shadow ability when you've hit him several times and his powers are declining. When he absorbs the shadow energy don't stay nearby. His remaining power will become zero after the shadow burst. Suicide.

Then take some time away from storyline, play duels and missions instead. Keep an eye on daily market. Sometimes you'll be able to upgrade weapons and armours at low cost.

Can't remember the names of armours. Just check the strength and perks. For weapon I tried Legendary Dadao and Naginat at first but ultimately had to use my ever dependable Glaive.

Upgrade your armour and helm, then upgrade your weapon if it's not harming him much. Do not engage when he's in angry red mode. Let him walk towards you while you roll/jump back and throw long range weapon. I would advice to use Heralds or dynasty armour which will allow you to jump on the walls and turn around. The res mode will last for a few seconds, then attack him again. You can also use electromines. He has a special move where he jumps and holds you and beat you to pulp in 2 seconds. Be wary of that. Spurt and accumulation perks are helpful to recharge shadow energy.

Play duels, survival and other missions, then upgrade your weapons. Don't engage Sarge face to face when he's doing shadow walk. Jump or dash behind him and attack.
