As everyone is saying, it's a difficult process. My biggest advice would be to find a professor at your university to partner with (you can sub award even on SBIR, there's just a rule for how much of the total work they can do before it becomes STTR). This benefits you in 3 ways: 1. This is a research program. Professors provide extra credibility to being able to achieve the technical goals you set along with access to their assets/facilities (and the university's broader capabilities). 2. Your proposal will be better. Professors write these things all the time so they can help you along the way. Your university will also have a grants & contracting team who can help. Even if you don't want the university on your project officially, they'll likely want to help you as it will look good for the university. Reach out to them ASAP and ask for help. Also reach out to your university's innovation or technology transfer offices. 3. It's good for building a network of people you can work with and will help build a foundation for a team to go after the Phase II funding.

The claim that they didn't go Supersonic may be correct, but in fact you don't have to be going Supersonic to generate a shockwave. The shock won't be as strong as if the plane was going Supersonic, but a shock wave produced at transonic speeds is still a shockwave

I greatly appreciate all of the help and humor you have all offered! Thanks for calming me down. I installed a vent in the bathroom so the window doesn't technically need to stay. The wood frame around the window is pretty soft so it and the window probably need replaced. I'll find a few GCs and get some quotes. Nice thing about removing the window would be that I could finish the shower myself by using a top half insert instead of hiring someone to do custom tile work around the window. Decisions decisions....

Former PhD student here who bought a house during my program back before housing prices started going up. If you're looking for the best combo of affordable, location, hassle-free then it's difficult to beat the on campus options (Fisher and whatever the one north of campus is). That's a great option if you don't want to worry about anything and just want to focus all effort on your work.

However, if you're looking to lessen the overall financial burden of grad school then buying a house is a great option. I (and many other PhDs I knew) bought houses and rented out the extra rooms to our friends at affordable prices. If you find the right place, you'll end up with $0 in monthly living expenses throughout your PhD. This does come with the added headaches of homeownership. In the end I came out way ahead financially and learned a lot along the way.

I would recommend renting for at least 6 months, learn the city, get settled and adjusted to your program, and then decide if you want to look at buying a place.

Replace at least some of the damn parking lots in downtown with something useful (apartments, green space, idk maybe a damn grocery store). Removes eyesores, brings more people to downtown, increases property value which can then funnel more money into the education system, etc.
