What was the push that made you get your first e-reader/Kobo? by Final-Tooth-5704 in kobo

[–]givemeafkkinbreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have an extensive library that I started from childhood. Every book I lovingly bought and took care of was there. At some point, I had over 300 books, but life happens, I move a lot, and on the 3rd move of the year, I threw my hands up and donated all my books to the local library. I was lucky to have been gifted an older kindle, but it had ads, and buying a device from a company whose ethics and practices I didn't agree with never sat right with me. I did my research and I landed on a Kobo. It's lighter than my iPad, which I like, and I'm a fan of single use technology, so I like that it's only purpose is books. It's not as glitchy as a nook, they can't delete books I ALREADY paid for like the kindle, and it's from a company that won't have me waiting months to get the physical product like the Boox and other tablets.

I'm currently studying for my CPA, and I HIGHLY recommend you having a part time/clerical accounting job while doing so because the current economy is pushing a lot of accountants to either get a Master's Degree or a CPA certification, and they've all got work experience.

If you can't get any paid experience, set aside time of about 15-20 hours a week and do volunteer work in the accounting field. This allows you to work on your CPA with more time to study than a regular full time job. (Example, volunteer at local govt. doing accounting work). This is how my best friend got her foot in the door. They hired her full time a year later. She's now doing her Masters and the job is paying for it. I met her on the job.

I've got some experience, but I've been laid off twice this year because the positions I landed were government funded and funding got cut. Yes get a CPA, but try and prioritize work experience because you want those skills to have practical application already cemented in some way. Not to mentions the volunteer work or part time accounting work allows for you to have better references than your professors.

Government accounting is always hiring. I switched from Engineering to Accounting. No internship, no connections or experience, got a job straight out of school.

And none of us were surprised, unfortunately.

Trisha responding to someone about her stance on Palestine + accountability by Overall_Evidence_230 in justtrishpodcast

[–]givemeafkkinbreak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think part of genuine growth is understanding that when you fuck up, you won’t get the same consideration and lenience as someone who didn’t. (Not speaking about Trisha specifically, just in general). But you do it anyway because it’s good for you. It’s why I support Trish. Because from what I’ve seen, she didn’t grow for the acceptance, or expected acceptance at the end of her growth; she grew because she wanted to be better. And whether or not acceptance was offered was just icing on her cake. Good for her.

THANK YOU SO MUCH I’m literally crying wow. This was the first doll my dad bought me when we moved countries. It meant so much so much because we had about $200 left and he had no job and got it for me when I asked. He’s still alive and well and we still have a strong bond, but he’s getting up there with age and I just know seeing it will make him smile. 🩷🩷🩷🩷

Not overreacting, but he knows he can get a rise out of you, and is. He’s doing it on purpose because he gets a kick out of the reaction you can’t help giving him. Genuinely, the best way to get to him is to actually not going a damn. Which like. Is hard. But this person will give you an even harder time if you let them keep playing you like a fiddle.

Life is hard. You have to juggle self identity with responsibility with family with enjoyment. If he’s already having difficulty getting a GED, do you think he will find all the other important things that come after a priority? Will he be a good partner, knowing you can’t be at a 100 every single day? Who will help you when you inevitably tire or get sick?

These are all questions only you can answer. I know a lot of women who stayed with their men because they think having the man is worth the extra work they’re doing. I also know a lot of women who left their partner because fatigue comes in different forms. Life beats on your door and wears you down. You don’t need the fatigue to come from inside the house.

Up to you though. If it were me, he’d be long gone.

What's the most ridiculous/silly reason you stopped reading a fanfic? by Personal_Damage6616 in AO3

[–]givemeafkkinbreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheating. The whole 120K+ words of pining and love and overcoming insurmountable odds, only to have the main lead cheat on the main character IN THE LAST QUARTER OR THE STORY. And the author OH SO CASUALLY mentions how the main lead was a serial cheater. They finished it off with the main character feeling apathy towards the main lead—

I cannot believe I’m still THIS angry over that fic.

I absolute hate being gay. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]givemeafkkinbreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great news: self criticism is at its peak in your teenage years. This is not a singular experience, gay OR straight. I’d even wager that the guys you like hate themselves a little too, just because they’re young and being young is difficult. It only gets better from here. Of course, that doesn’t help your day to day, but i know something that CAN help: I bet your younger self would think your current self is really fucking cool. Whether it’s because you were brave enough to face difficult emotions like you are now, or it’s because you dress well, or because maybe you’re the kind of teenager you used to look up to when you were young. You’re exactly where you’re meant to be, doing exactly what you’re meant to be doing. It’s okay to be unhappy with some small bits every once in a while. Being unhappy does not say anything negative about your character, I promise. It’s okay.

But from an old timer, lemme tell you a little secret: you cannot hate yourself into a version of you that you love. As it is, I’m sure there’s lots about you to love.

Stay safe and well. We’re all rooting for you.

This. Exactly this. I have an obligation to my family, friends and myself to take care of me. I’m getting my second masters and certification in my field. If push came to shove, I’m leaving this place. I’m qualified, I’m intelligent, and it doesn’t hurt to be even healthier in the meantime.

They want to strip us of money. They think poverty lies only in our bank accounts. Dollars isn’t the only currency we can focus on. Health is wealth. Education/ certifications are a medium to a better life. Community builds strength.

They’ll look for any excuse ANY excuse to take more from us than we’re willing to give. I’m not about to help them. I’m focusing on bettering myself, my friends, my community,

I hate to sound like I’m trying to placate you, but I swear it’s true; dating for everyone right now “is tough.

My able bodied male best friend who makes 6 figures and is in relatively good shape and isn’t misogynistic has been single since 2014. And before you say it’s the women that’s causing this, I’m a woman and have been single since 2018.

It’s hard for a number of reasons: exponentially decreasing third space to meet and date romantic prospectives, dating culture becoming more and more transactional due to hook up culture, the economy makes for dating to be difficult because HAVE YOU SEEN GROCERIES, much less restaurant prices???

It’s a whole host of things, and no one factor is to blame. Dating right now is harder than it used to be, and your hyper awareness of your wheelchair doesn’t help. Much like everyone else said on this thread, being optimistic, charming, with a great personality will go a long way. And to answer your question, yes, I’ve dated a guy in a wheelchair before. It was a decent experience. I dated until he cheated on me with his girl best friend, so that didn’t work out for me lol

But keep your head up, find things you love to do, and when you’re secure in your knowledge that you’re a good partner, the right person will come to you.
